Gaming Playing Imports on a Wii

I am new to the particularities of the Wii -

If I have a Wii with a mod chip, can I also play Original Import disks?

Or Import backups?

I am not sure exactly which mod chip is installed in the Wii (if it matters) -- the seller does not know this...

I remember in the days of the Saturn, more than just a mod chip was needed to play import games -- so I am never quite sure...

just don't update your firmware to 4.2... apparently modchips don't work on that firmware. well my wasabi's regionfree capabilities don't work anymore
