BnJ looks like fun.
Yeah, I wasted days at the arcade playing BnJ. The game had a secret trick that scored big points, too. If you could get through an entire stage without damaging a single enemy car, you would get 100,000 points bonus. Most player's scores were in the 10s of thousands, so nobody could get near the guys who knew the game's secret.

It was pretty challenging to do the trick once, but if you could manage it on 3 or 4 stages, you would usually go straight to the top of the high score table.

If you accidentally killed just one car near the end of the stage though, you'd only get a tiny bonus of 1000 points - and the sound of all your mates laughing at your misfortune.

But that was cool - trying to do the no damage trick added extra challenge to the game, once you'd mastered the repetitive road layouts. The only truly random factor was the enemy cars themselves.

Hopefully, that's sparked off some inspiration for you, Jayenkai. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to install MAME, and try to remember where I stashed that BnJ ROM...

Got 4 ideas:
1. That game where you have to connect a bunch of computer to the server, don't know the name.
2. Mastermind, the game where you have to guess the right sequence of colors/shapes/whatever.
3. Something like PapiJump, it's a game for iPhone and iPod Touch. The developer has a Java demo on his website: http://www.sunflat.net/en/games/papijump.html
4. Sokoban, that game where you have to put boxes in the right places.

there was a great audio keyboard app for nes, the rom is called Ikinari Musician (J).nes. all you do is play music to beats. i think with the actual cart you could record as the famicon controller had a mic. i've spent hours just playing with this rom in nesds, and it has provided hours of enjoyment for my 5yr (now 6yr old! - happy bday to him) nephew. what would be nice is some way to spin this into a game with progression and points using simple graphics and old school sounds. this could make use of all the aspects of the ds. touch screen, mic, audio, etc.

i love any and all old board games. things that might work on the ds would be trouble, operation, sorry, yahtzee. i'm thinking now about how much fun it would be to play a low rez operation game with silly stuff to yank out of the girls body.

Progress Report #1

Having setup PALib to accept Mod Jumping, I'm starting to build a small Jingles collection, all inside a nice small, single mod file. That'll allow each and every game to have it's own little titlescreen jingle, as well as using a predefined set of default Dead/Complete/etc jingles, too.
I've also got a nice big chunky font, and a couple of smaller fonts, for all manner of useful purposes.

More detailed progress reports will be available daily at AGameAWeek.com, as it happens! (Or at least, when I'm not too busy actually coding the thing!)

I'm not sure, yet, which game I'll be coding first, but I'm starting to download a huge batch of Sokoban levels.. 'cos.. you know.. they're always handy!

They'll be my sample Level data, since there's lots of 'em to make use of. I'll have a play, and see how small I can compress them.. if they get too big then I'm absolutely definitely going to have to have level files.
If not, I might get away with cramming loads of data into a constantly growing .nds file!

We'll have to wait and see!!

I really wanted a Shopping Cart Hero for DS.
It's probably easy to make, besides the physics.
And if possible, mods. It would be GREAT.

An interesting dilemma has cropped up, this morning.

I got all the tile/map system working wonders, my sprites are all working, and my different spritesheets are loading in and out as needed.
So, although there's only 1 game in there (Sokoban's now playable) the menu system is ready to be built up, and the engine's prepared for multiple games.
Lovely Stuff..

But here's the thing.
Sokoban, what with it's nice scrolling maps, and things.. Kinda only uses one screen.
Or, rather, I haven't made any use, whatsoever, of the upper screen..
..
At all!

And, given that I'm aiming for nicer, scrollier games, this time.. I'm going to be doing that a lot!

It's a bit odd.
And I'm not sure what to do with the topscreen, other than using it for highscores, and things like that..

Suggestions welcome..
