Erm, okay, I'm about to do something incredibly strange here.

I'm about to advocate piracy.

See, Digitanks developer Lunar Workshop has decided that the best way to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act, which will "stop them making a living on the internet" if passed, is to encourage all of you to download their game for free, illicitly. Here.

We've got the full quotes from Jorge "Vino" Rodriguez explaining the move after the break.
Today is Internet Blackout Day, in protest of SOPA. To do my small part in the protest I encourage everybody to pirate Digitanks for free. If this legislation passes then I won’t be able to make a living on the internet, so you may as well pirate my games.

I’m not asking you to buy the game if you like it. Hell I’m not even asking you to play it. Just download it, and pass the word on to your friends. Already own Digitanks? Download it again, just for kicks. There is no DRM on the original version of Digitanks, so this is really just the install files from the game, same as you would get if you bought it.

“But wait Vino,” I hear you say. “It’s not really pirating if you pirate your own game, is it?” My response to you is, “Shut up you nut fucker and pirate my damn game.” Or do you like SOPA?
If you enjoy it, consider donating some money or buying the game again, legally. It's the least you can do.

Edit: And just in case some people jump on the rules bandwagon, the .torrent is hosted on the developers website.

It's certainly a novel approach to [strike]protesting[/strike] advertising; I'll give them that.
lolfixed :P

I don't think this is pirating since the user has permission to download from the rights holder. Also, while this is for a good cause, the dev also has a vested interest in increasing future sales of his product by coat-tailing a red-hot political issue for publicity.

Actually, no, this is an amazing way of taking down pirates. The developer is hosting the file themselves, which is a trap in and of itself.

Hey, pirate my game. Enjoy your lawsuit.

Edit: Don't think I'm accusing this developer, I'm saying be wary in the future.

It's not really pirating if the developer is handing it on a plate as Joe88 and Snailface said

He's encouraging piracy, not giving away the game. You may have the physical files, but you don't have the rights to own them.
He made the torrent, he's hosting the torrent, he's probably seeding the torrent at this moment in time.

Seriously, it's just a giveaway labelled as 'pirating' - It probably would be pirating if getting it from another source.

I just downloaded this to try it out. The opening was pretty awesome, might as well see what it's like. =3
Also, this guy might be just advertising his game, but the idea in itself is pretty solid, for people that release small games like this, SOPA will ruin a lot of things. =S

I understand that. That's what everyone believes. That's what I believe. All I'm saying is, that's not how the law will see it. All the more reason to take down PIPA, no?

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

    not really

It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.

RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament

maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
