That's a gloss finish, he's talking about a mirror finish. Where the surface is a perfect mirror when the screen is off. It's basically a one-way mirror where the screen is the dark room.

I really don't believe that, but I need to test. (maybe cover the frame in colored paper)

I predict Nintendo is being over-cautious about protecting the 3D effect, and the black frame is not necessary.

IMO the black frame is much much better than having it Pink, go Photoshop the 3DS top screen pink, looks hideous when compared to the original

Same here... green was my favorite when the 3DS was first announced(there also were purple and orange colors, IIRC).
This pink one will appeal to quite the population, though.
