noticed something while testing ARMSX2 for Android compatibility and wanted to bring it to the attention of other HD texture-pack creators here.

ARMSX2 has a built-in section where users can download HD texture packs directly through the app. Looking through the list, I found several of my own older texture packs being offered as “Community Archive Texture Packs.”

These are credited to my old username, C0meg3ts0me, so I'm not saying they removed my credit. However, I never submitted these packs to ARMSX2 and I never gave permission for my packs to be redistributed through their built-in downloader.

Some of mine that I found include ICO, Scarface: The World Is Yours, Cold Fear, Extermination, Final Fight: Streetwise, and Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance.

From what I can see, a large collection of community HD texture packs has also been uploaded to Internet Archive, and ARMSX2 appears to be using that archive as a source for at least some of the packs available through its built-in downloader. There are hundreds of packs listed from many different creators. Some entries even state that the original texture-pack creator could not be identified in the public mirror.

I'm curious whether the other texture-pack creators here already knew about this.
If your work is listed there, did you personally submit it or give permission for it to be uploaded to the archive and redistributed through ARMSX2?

I'm not trying to accuse every person involved of anything without knowing the full story. I'm posting because I can confirm that my own packs are there without my authorization, and I'd like to know whether other creators are in the same situation.

I'm going to include screenshots showing what I'm seeing in the app.

I'm curious about the "texture pack credited to (username) by the curated PCSX2 HD...". This group is not curated, maybe they're referring to the spreadsheet? Are they downloading all my mirrors and reuploading on archive dot net?

Edit: So I found out they're crediting an old Archive.net upload as a source, a folder containing almost 600GB of outdated packs. If you want to stop this you just need to mass report it or I can make people know in the spreadsheet that the files in the ARMSX2 catalogue are all outdated and should not be used (also, they might contain a virus since we don't know who reuploaded them).

This is highly worrisome but not surprising to me. Anytime you obtain a pack or file for that matter always make sure it comes from the source or creator cause you never know what you may get like Sad said above. The hope is if its reported by enough people someone will look at it and get it removed but that relies on someone caring. Best bet is to spread the word and warn others.

Hi, ARMSX2 developer here. Just to clarify, ARMSX2 links to downloads hosted by a third party. The packs themselves aren’t bundled with the app.

We added the downloader to make publicly available community packs easier to find and install. We link to creators’ original sources and make every effort to preserve credit. The “Community Archive” label identifies the download source; it doesn’t mean the creators submitted their packs to ARMSX2 or endorsed their inclusion.

I understand your concern, though, attribution and public availability don’t tell us whether you’re comfortable having your packs listed in an integrated downloader. We are happy to remove your packs from our listings if that’s your preference, or update your credited username if you’d like them to remain available.

Our intention was to make community creations more accessible while recognizing the people who made them. Thanks for bringing your concerns directly to our attention and let us know if you'd like something to be done.

We event went through the trouble of converting each pack to ASTC to further benefit mobile GPUs for both performance and ram usage. Thanks for bringing your concerns directly to our attention and let us know if you'd like something to be done.
Goaded as always ❤️ appreciate the response

Yo. Other ARMSX2 developer here. Just a couple of random thoughts:
  • I see a texture pack here offered for a PS2 game that I am on the credits in as a developer, so I am curious if original PS2 developers like me were asked for permission before creating or even selling these packs?
  • Honestly I think it's cool what you're doing, and I like this community so I'm curious if you all see a pathway where we can both satisfy your needs as creators as well as the users needs to have a convenient way to use your work.
  • I want to be clear here that you all have a lot of control in this. If y'all are salty about this feature we'd much rather remove it than anger this community.
  • We target small-screen phones and devices and honestly programmatic upscaling algorithms will satisfy a fair swath of our userbase, but I just think this community is cool and crediting your work as best we can seems better than boring algorithmic upscales.
Anyways, I appreciate this discussion and hopefully we can smooth out some of the rough edges.

Hey, me again. More thoughts:
  • all of the texture packs in this repo we use are ASTC compressed KTX textures, so they're not usable on desktop PCSX2 or really in any other context outside ARMSX2.
  • Most of the systems our users own cannot run your texture packs as-is due to memory constraints, so it's useful to think of this as an expansion of your userbase not coopting them.
  • I think there's a lot of cool stuff we can do with the code to work together in expanding texture packs capabilities. For example it would be cool if the emulator recorded negative mip levels for all the dumped textures so we can get real-game info on what upscaling ratios we really need. For example if some textures never make it to mips below 0 then no need to waste disk on the upscale. If some small textures hit mip -4 then we provide a 16x upscale version.

My thoughts on the built-in downloader are that I'm actually fine with HD texture packs being available through the emulator. I think that's a good feature and makes things easier for users. I just think the packs should come from links provided by the original texture pack creators.
So if an artist has their pack hosted on Ko-fi, Patreon, YouTube, GitHub, a forum thread, or wherever they officially distribute it, ARMSX2 should use the link the artist provides rather than pulling an older copy from a third-party archive. That way users get the latest version, the creator keeps their traffic and credit, and ARMSX2 can still make installing HD packs easy.
