This one is driving me nuts.

1. I guess it was 3.2E PAL Wii (I would assume oldest possible for Mario Cart and Mario Galaxy - though it might be 3.3E). I installed those cioses, there's some modchip.
2. Pikmin2 shows the update icon as the disk channel. Runs through GeckoOS 1.9 just fine.
3. Installed Waninkoko 4.0E. Menu shows this version, there's SD card icon - I assume update was a success.
3. I tried to update everything using DOP - no luck. Managed to get HBC upside-down - fixed ios61.
4. Installed cIOScorp 3.5 - no luck.

What else could I've forgotten? Could it be that my Wii was so old that there's something I need installing that is not mentioned in any guide/added to any package? I'm not even sure Pikmin2 is from a proper region - can somebody tell me how to check the region so I let it update the console?

Just look at the game box to know its region.
You can update safetely with the game, it won't touch anything important on your Wii. It includes 3.4, and you have a semi-4.0. If you tried to update all IOS with Dop-IOS it means that the game is trying to find stub IOS you don't have installed. Updating with Pikmin 2 will only install these stubs.
I don't know why people don't want to update through disc. It's the best and safest method, and every game has 4.1 or lower right now. There are no risks.
