First of all, it could be a virus, run an anti-virus first to make sure that it is true, otherwise if the anti virus can't eliminate it, then you need a complete format for, and you shouldn't even backup your files, since it has been affected. Otherwise if the anti virus didn't pick up anything, I'd say it looks like artifacts, I'd say your GPU could be overheating. If this is the case, what video card are you using? Is it overclocked? Does it have proper cooling? (a heatsink AND a fan).

Think so, too. Same happened to me, once, only that I didn't have my screen "checkered" like this, more garbled. Like a pixel barfed on my screen.I vote overheating GPU.
I said virus because I had a very similar screen once. Turns out the virus corrupts every driver (including video) you have for the computer. Since it was a virus, the best solution is format without backing up.+ overheating
