Anyone know what could be causing this?

The screen stay garbled for a while. Sometimes Vista recovers from it, sometime I have to restart.

    Any ideas?

First of all, it could be a virus, run an anti-virus first to make sure that it is true, otherwise if the anti virus can't eliminate it, then you need a complete format for, and you shouldn't even backup your files, since it has been affected. Otherwise if the anti virus didn't pick up anything, I'd say it looks like artifacts, I'd say your GPU could be overheating. If this is the case, what video card are you using? Is it overclocked? Does it have proper cooling? (a heatsink AND a fan).

My PC was never modded, or even opened, so it must be the heating problem!

I think my warranty is still valid.

I vote for the most obvious, corrupt video driver.

That looks similar to the xbox360 checkerboard effect (RRoD). I vote overheating GPU

Think so, too. Same happened to me, once, only that I didn't have my screen "checkered" like this, more garbled. Like a pixel barfed on my screen.

Switched out the graphics card and everything was fine again.

I said virus because I had a very similar screen once. Turns out the virus corrupts every driver (including video) you have for the computer. Since it was a virus, the best solution is format without backing up.

Hmm, without disagreeing in my experience such video problems mostly occurred from heating issues.
