I can't get a new iPod unless theres an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1. (I have loads of cracked apps on iTunes and they won't sync without app sync)

Is there an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 yet?

A brand new iPod cant downgrade
If it comes with 4.1 it can be jailbroken with linera1n (or greenp0sion, but limera1n has been better for me)

As for 4.3 End of febuary to early march, could be sooner.

Why not just jailbreak tethered?

Also, nobody said they're waiting 'til iOS 4.3....
Comex said he was waiting for the verizon iPhone 4.

You need SHSH blobs to downgrade. If his friend bought it recently, it probably came with 4.2.1 preinstalled, which means that there is no going back.

Dang! Really? I thought we could downgrade any device using:

Code:
Step 1: Download old ipsw firmware files iPad iOS 3.2.2 or 3.2.1 and save it on your desktop.

Step 2: Put your device into DFU mode with following instructions.

* Connect your iPhone to your computer.
* Turn iPhone off.
* Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
* Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
* A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
* If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

Step 3: Do the following changes in your server.“c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\” and open the hosts file in a notepad or wordpad. MAC users can navigate to the path “/etc/” and open the hosts file with TextEdit.

Step 4: At the end of file add the string “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” useful to redirect requests for certificates for authenticity that iTunes will make to the Saurik server.Follow the steps to do so.

For windows users:

# Open Notepad with administrator privileges and then right click on the icon of notepad and click on “Open as administrator”
# Now that Notepad is open Go to folder C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc and open the file
# Add the following line at the end of the document and save it: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

For Mac users:

# Navigate to Go -> Go to Folder and enter the path /etc
# Open the file hosts with TextEdit, add the following string 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com and save the file to your desktop.
# Now return to the previous folder by following the same method and copy the text within this file by replacing the original file (If prompted for a password enter it and click OK)

Step 5: Now open iTunes and do a normal reset by holding down the SHIFT key (for Windows users) or Alt key (for Mac users) and clicking restore in iTunes. This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded iPad 3.2.2 or iPad 3.2.1 file. Select the ipsw file and click on “Open”.

Step 6: Wait till iTunes installs the firmware on your iPad. After the update process is completed, iTunes might show the following error messages: “The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1004).” and “iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.” Press “OK” to continue.

Step 7: Your iPad will be stuck in Recovery Mode, showing that “Connect to iTunes” screen. To exit your device from Recovery Mode, download TinyUmbrella (Windows / Mac). Run it and the click on “Kick Device Out of Recovery”button. Your iPad will now restart normally.

Read both the guides before posting a new topic, a lot of solutions to most of the questions are given there. (not that you posted this, but for future reference)

Let's say you have the hosts file changed, and you're performing a restore. iTunes will send the SHSH request to Cydia's servers. If the SHSHs are not on Cydia's servers, the request gets passed on to Apple, as seen below.

Apple then responds with the SHSHs. As Cydia receives the SHSHs, it also saves them for future use. (When a new firmware comes out, Apple often stops signing the previous one.)

Cydia's servers will also *try* to save the SHSHs when new firmware updates come out. You can trigger this via one of two ways: On your device, tell Cydia to "Make my life easier!" or send an SHSH request to Cydia's seervers (as described above... you can also use TinyUmbrella for it).

I hope that made sense...

Not much really... why would the iPad requires the net to downgrade itself or upgrade itself... since I dont have any wifi here at my home, this means I wont be able to JB it much? pretty weird...

Also, on step 4:
Code:
tep 4: At the end of file add the string “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” useful to redirect requests for certificates for authenticity that iTunes will make to the Saurik server.Follow the steps to do so.

isnt it the part where it do go get the SHSHs ont another server?

When you want to go to a certain firmware (either upgrading, downgrading or restoring), iTunes sends a request to Apple's servers with your firmware and your specific device for approval (Apple's signature). Apple only signs current firmwares (like 4.2.1 today), so if it isn't the current one, Apple just doesn't sign and whatever you are trying to do fails. But if Apple does sign, iTunes can proceed. Now, when you jailbreak, you can press the "Make my life easier" button in Cydia. When you do that, Cydia sends every possible request for your device to Apple, and if Apple signs them, it then saves the signature (SHSH blobs) to Saurik's server (creator of Cydia). That way, when you want to downgrade, you change your host file on your computer so iTunes asks for the signature from Saurik, not Apple.
If you don't save your SHSH blobs while they are for the current firmware, there is no other way to get them, since Apple won't start signing older firmwares. They can't be shared either, since all the SHSH blobs are unique.

Hope this helps.

I get my ipad, its 4.2.1, I use redsn0w for the tethered jb... days later greenpois0n release the unthetered 4.2.1... will I be able to do the greenpois0n over the redsn0w? or will I have to revert back to original 4.2.1 un-jb state and format everything in order to do the GP's JB?

You *should* be fine if you go from redsn0w to greenpois0n.
