Mistyped title, what I am wondering is of course if OFW could be on emunand instead of sysnand! Sorry.

My switch got CFW before emunand was a thing. It's the hackable release version. As far as I know it has never been banned, and hasn't been online in ages.I have a clean NAND backup, but it is really, really old, probably running 2.0.1 or something similar. I have been thinking about getting the switch online again. I probably wouldn't play online much anyway, but to see if it works, and accessing the store would be nice as well.

Instead of creating an emunand for continued CFW, restoring the very old clean NAND, and then updating that, it seems easier to just create an emunand from the NAND backup, keep the sysnand dirty, and use emunand for OFW. I know this is not what the guides tell you to do if you are hacking a switch from scratch, but is there any reason not to do this? I wouuld think performance is slightly better on sysnand, and as CFW is what I'll be running primarily, it seems a good place to have the CFW.

sure. but I don't know how long it'll take for Nintendo to ban you (I'm pretty sure they can detect that the switch is running on emunand)
you should create an emunand from your existing dirty nand and then reset the switch's nand using one of the anti-ban guides

I don't see why that would be easier to detect than the presence of an emunand partition, but I guess it is better to just go with the default option, as that will likely lead to less problems with configs or compatibility later anyway.

Do you have a link to guide? I know how to restore the NAND backup from hekate, but perhaps there are some things to watch out for when connection and updating the old restored nand as well?

You can run OFW from emunand.
Many people use two emunands ( one for OFW and One for CFW) to keep sysnand FW to a low FW version

If I'm not mistaken it's still not possible to this day to launch an emuMMC partition with the "stock" option of Hekate, the launch option that is the closest to a regular boot and starts HOS without atmosphere running. So no, technically there is no way to boot an emuMMC partition without CFW.

About nintendo being able to detect emuMMC partitions I haven't heard of a single reason to think that they have the ability to do so. When you ask if you can do something even slightly dodgy on this forum 95% of the time people will tell you that you'll get banned without a second thought, so don't take this kind of non argumented answers too seriously. I think it's mostly people who would like to do these things but don't dare to because of the fear of getting banned, so they reassure themselves by perpetrating the narrative that anything gets you banned. This way they don't feel like they are missing out on the good stuff.
Personally I've been online on sysnand with CFW for ages and am not banned, atmosphere has been able to mimic HOS telemetry very accurately (if not perfectly) for a while. Obviously I never installed any illegitimate NSC (this is clearly documented to get you banned) nor used any mods on sysNAND.

EDIT :

How do you start OFW on emuNAND, is the stock option of hekate compatible now ? Or is there something I missed ?

You don't need a guide to restore eMMC backups with Hekate. Just place them in the restore folder and let Hekate do the rest.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
