Obsidian announces The Outer Worlds 2

Coming from Obsidian's side at Microsoft's 2021 E3 conference wasn't anything Fallout-related, but they are working on a new game alongside Avowed. The Outer Worlds is getting a sequel, expanding upon the heavily capitalistic world of the original. The trailer was very blunt in poking fun at itself saying that there's really not much to say or know about the game just yet, as it's so early in development, but it certainly exists.

This is by far their worst IP...
I don't think there's really anything wrong with the IP itself, it's basically just Fallout in space, but they certainly could've done more with that premise than they did in the first game. It's just too short and too binary, whereas choices and morality in New Vegas felt more freeform and less restrictive. More endings, more nuanced characters, and better melee combat would go a long way toward righting the ship. Hopefully with Microsoft's resources they can add all that and more.

Obsidian, known for their subtle writing and interesting characters, managed to make a bland world with boring characters and a heavy-handed message that smacks you in the face every time you turn around. It's Fallout 4 but with bad combat, bad perks, bad skills, no melee to speak of. No choices that matter, nothing that makes you think, the least RPG RPG they've ever made. I can't imagine they'll improve ALL of those aspects in a sequel.

I dunno, the whole game felt rushed. Maybe not to the same extent as something like Anthem, but rushed nonetheless. If Microsoft is more chill about the development timeline, I don't see any reason why OW2 can't be completely re-imagined from the ground up, to the point where it shares almost nothing but the title with the original.

Have you stopped to think maybe its just not your kinda game
The combat is fine and the quests are nice, Also there isnt actually a single game where your choices ultimately matter typically they converge into atmost a few different endings

I hated how cynical that trailer was :wtf:
I think the game was funny and peculiar due to its witticism; it makes sense why they did that trailer (plays off their witticism and snarkiness) and it also makes fun of every other developer who just slaps some movie trailers together to show off their game instead of in-game play.

Maybe it’s just me but I am not a fan of self-aware cynical marketing, something that actually was all over the Xbox showing in general

They marketed it as a spiritual successor to Fallout New Vegas lol.
That's my biggest issue with it. Thye acted like it was going to be Fallout New Vegas-like but it couldn't be further from it. It has boring characters, a bland world with 50's futuristic aesthetic, a really boring story that feels super generic (basically "corporations bad"), very few quests, and each area is tiny (like Wii game sized areas). Feels more like Fable in space than a Fallout NV successor, but Fable actually has decent writing. Smaller area sizes and the 50's sci-fi setting wouldn't be an issue if it weren't advertised like a Fallout New Vegas successor, but that made it sound like it was going to be some big open world post apocalyptic game in space, not a mostly linear sci-fi dystopia story.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
