Barack Obama is set to announce a new defence strategy that would reduce the circumstances in which the US would be prepared to use nuclear weapons.
It would rule out a nuclear response to attacks on the US involving biological, chemical or conventional weapons.
Nor would the US use nuclear arms on non-nuclear states that comply with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
Mr Obama said he would make exceptions for states deemed in violation of the treaty, naming Iran and North Korea.
Ahead of the report's release, Mr Obama told the New York Times he was convinced Iran was on a course that "would provide them with nuclear weapons capabilities".
Last week, Mr Obama said he wanted to see new UN sanctions on Tehran "within weeks".
Tehran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful, but its refusal to adhere to international demands has raised fears of a possible strike on its nuclear facilities by the US or Israel.
The New York Times said Mr Obama described his new policy as "part of a broader effort to edge the world toward making nuclear weapons obsolete, and to create incentives for countries to give up any nuclear ambitions".
The details of his plan - the Nuclear Posture Review - are to be published later on Tuesday.
Its release comes ahead of a planned signing by Mr Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, of a new nuclear arms reduction pact in Prague on Thursday.
The pact, agreed last month, commits Russia and the US to big cuts in nuclear warheads.
The pact would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (Start), which expired last December and the new treaty restricts both Russia and the US to 1,550 warheads, about 30% less than currently allowed, the US says.
Mr Obama hailed the treaty as the most comprehensive weapons control agreement in nearly two decades and is hosting a nuclear non-proliferation summit in Washington next week, which is set to be attended by dozens of world leaders.
The US president has said his goal is to have a nuclear-free world, and has promised to cut the number of nuclear weapons in the US arsenal.
A White House statement on Monday said the new nuclear policy offered "an alternative to developing new nuclear weapons, which we reject".

Getting rid of all the weapons wouldn't = peace around the world
Keep in mind there are a lot of countries like north korea cuba and other's would would attack.
And it would only be a matter of time before some one greedy and lusting for power would try to take over the world or a few countries, and with no weapons to fight back they would have little to nothing to stop them.
Granted weapons of massdestruction we could probably live with out but than again you have to remember there are just countries out there that don't want peace they want to rule and would sooner or later build there own and probably even use them, the only thing keeping them from doing that is the fact that there enemy will use the same weapons on them if they do.

Long story short lets stop making them but keep a few.. but lets SAY were still making them maybe that would work or maybe thats what there doing now?

meh, still enough nukes to kill everyone several times over.

surely this would only apply to strategic nukes? and not tactical nukes? (there is an oxymoron for you if the ever was one)

of course, he won't take action against Israel, who are also in violation of the treaty.

Not bad. I don't think nuclear bombs are even going to be used by the USA, since they normally don't try to kill everyone. Think they learned a lesson awhile ago.

It's our nuclear weapons that have kept the peace since WWII. Obama's stance will make America look weak in the eye's of our enemies and invite an attack. By saying that if there's a chemical or biological attack we will only respond with conventional means will most likely be seen as a green light for our enemies to do just that. The unintended consequences of this decision will lead to an explosion of chemical and biological programs. Well Obama is destroying our economy he may as well weaken us in every way possible while he's at it.

Nukes=low level brushfire wars

No nukes=the return of world wars

Nicely said. We only have 2 1/2 years left, so I'm not really all that worried.. It's not like one person alone can really do that much damage anyway,

And how is worse any than Western Imperialism?

Because Western Imperialism is based off of increasing profits and workforce the Japanese Imperialism was more of an assertion of racial dominance. Japans Imperialism had more in common with Hitlers Imperialism. If you want to see how it different it is study up what Japan did to Korea and China. For a cracking example of Japanese Imperialism look up Unit 731.
