Hi, total wii noob here so please be gentle!

I have a wii that hasn't been turned on in probably about 2 years almost. So I go to play some new-ish games today, and realise I should probably update my wii.

It is currently running 3.3e, and does not have a mod chip. it has homebrew channel on it, I think it's software was updated by installing the zelda hack and some software pack from djtaz (?) a long time ago.

So, I don't know what an ios is, what ios I have, or anything else.

Is there an idiot-proof guide that I can follow that will safely update my machine to be able to do all the latest cool stuff and play the latest games?

I have a read a couple of guides but get massively confused by the end of the first line, and I don't want to brick my wii. I don't have bootmii installed, I know that for sure.

So, can anyone offer any advice, thanks!
yeah the twilight princess hack is really very old. but it served its purpose to me also.

you start with the basics first by updating your homebrew channel to the latest and installing bootmii. follow the guide here: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/ha...uide/the-basics.

afterwards, you have to update your ios and cios. it is up to you to update your system menu. i do suggest to update you system menu to 4.1 at least. follow the guide here: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide/trucha.

after hacking your wii time for you to choose a loader for your originals and backups: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/backup-launchers. to update all of your homebrew apps just use homebrew browser then connect your wii to the internet to get the latest and newest apps. if you don't want to use HBB and want to do it manually, go to wiibrew.org to check on the latest apps for your HBC.

@super_baros: you're welcome and have fun.

Cool, thanks razorback

I've been reading more, is the stuff you mentioned basically covered by this guide here:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=171901
?

What I'm asking is, even though my wii has some softmod on it, and I have no idea what, is it cool to follow this guide instead of doing it with a virgin wii?

Thanks again!
Yes, that guide is a part of the other one, so you can use that one too

You don't need to revirginize it, just start the guide

Hi again guys

I'm stuck - following the complete guide, I followed the instructions, but when I exited the bannerbomb program (I had installed hbc, dvdx, bootmii as ios, bootmii as boot2), I got a black screen with white writing, some kind of error. I googled it and it seemed to be nothing to worry out, so I powered off, then powered on. Bootmii started, but neither of my wiimotes would work (blue lights would flash, then nothing). I tried to re-sync them with the red button but nothing. I hit reset on the wii, and it went straight to the hbc with the 'load wad manager 1.5' on it. The wiimotes also seemed synced at this time! So I loaded the wad manager, and the instructions say in the guide to use IOS36 (the first option, before I am supposed to go through the list to install all the wads), but this number doesn't appear in the list.

This is what is listed:
4
9
11
12
13
15
17
20
21
30
31
33
34
35
37
249
254

I am usin a pal wii, a couple of years old at least.

Any advice on what to do? Thanks!

Getting a black Wii in a matter of minutes, gonna read up on everything and apply whatever I can to softmod it.

Questions that I can't seem to find so quickly:

1. Black Wii hackable? I've seen proof of British black Wiis but also European?
All Wii's are hackable Black Wii's are the same as White ones.
2. Softmodding, what can I do in terms of the following?

- Play burned games (compatibility list somewhere?)
near 100% compatible http://wiki.gbatemp.net:8080/wiki/index.ph...kup_Launcher_v3
edit: almost forgot, most black ones have a new drive that doesn't play Burned discs
frown.gif

- Play USB games from HDD (compatibility list somewhere?)
Most games will need certain fixes (like 002fix) http://wiki.gbatemp.net:8080/wiki/index.ph...e_Compatibility
- Same two above but for GC games
Only from Disc http://wiki.gbatemp.net:8080/wiki/index.ph...patibility_List
- Homebrew?
Same as for White Wii (but do not downgrade)

Thanks, a link to a topic explaining all this in one time is also good (way too many noob topics)
Thank you very much my southern neighbor!

Too bad about the GC stuff, guess we'll need to wait for some further developments!

Install r14 and it will overwrite r15
r15 is only meant for USB loaders btw.

Use 249 instead

And the wiimote not syncing is normal (thats always the case in the bootmii menu). You can only use a GC controller or the buttons on the Wii.

one again thanks very much tj_cool, you're a total genius!

I'm going to take a break now and carry on installing everything tomorrow (got the "update to 4.2" section done completely now).

While I'm already embarassing myself with my noobiness, where do I read to find out how to use all these tools, like bootmii to make my wii brick-proof, etc?

Thanks (and sorry!)

Hello guys, I'm trying to run New Super Mario, but I think I have to update my IOS 53 with truch bug...

I tried to use DOP-IOS MOD, but as I entered the aplication it asked which IOS I wanted to use and I don't wanna risk my Wii.

I have:

Wii 4.1
cIOS249 r14
HBC v1.0.6
NeoGamma r8b12

Do I really need to update my IOS???

Which IOS I choose in the first screen of DOP-IOS MOD?

Thanks again.

In case I need to update my Wii to 4.2U, I just want to know how. Currently, I have a Wii Key 2 mod chip installed, and the Homebrew Channel along with Preloader v0.29. Also, right now, I'm on 4.0U. So how would I update to either 4.1 or 4.2?

Thanks
i suggest you just update to 4.1U: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide/trucha
if you really 4.2U which adds nothing but blocking homebrew then this: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/other-stuff/virgin

Is 4.2U required for any games?
And that link you gave me recommends updating to 4.2
blink.gif
it is because your question is "so how would i update to either 4.1 or 4.2?" right? maybe if your question is "do i need to update my wii to run newer games?" then the answer is NO. you can stay at 3.2 and run newer games. just update your 249, 222, 223 and use the loaders necessary. if you insist on using the disc and you are at lower system menu you can use neogamma so that games could run off 249. if you want the disc channel then use preloader to force loading games to 249. if you do not want any of these then update all your ios using dop ios mod without changing your current system menu so that newer ios are available for newer games. correct me if i am wrong 3.2 users because haven't use 4.0 lower version for a certain period of time.

THANKS

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
