As far as I remember they are. Nintendo still treats games like ROMs (or did) so everything is in banks and blocks.

Alignment is one of the reason game engines often use packed asset fines so a bunch of small files don't waste ROM/optical disc space.

So 1:1 isos are 32k alligned, right? they shouldn't have problems if they are clean dumps?

What is this?

I mistyped "files" :D

VinsCool: I think they're supposed to be. We used one of the cheaper USB-based dev units in a class I took so we never sent anything to actually be certified. I'm almost sure file misalignment would result in your title failing certification because it could cause be a crash condition.

The DVD drive does streaming audio decoding in its hardware so if the files aren't aligned to the disk's sector size it could cause the audio to skip because of buffer underruns due to excessive seeking. If the audio starts in the middle of the sector instead of at the beginning it could interfere with the block decoding for the stream. Then if the game's trying to load stuff too the read delays from the thrashing would possibly cause a freeze. (Not to mention wear on the laser transport. :P)

gamecube games are not consistently 32k aligned, that also isnt needed, the packer from nintendo automatically aligned the actually needed files to the alignment. Original, 1:1 ISOs will never fail you, also games compressed with some sort of modern compressor (let it be discex, dmtoolbox, my gc iso compressor) will automatically align the files the same way the original packer from nintendo did. Only very bad compressors from the past made the mistake of not caring about alignment, thats why there even is this 32k option in modern compressors, they basically can force 32k to every file just to be sure that old, bad dumps are even playable, the option should only be used if its really needed.

Well audiostreaming games need to be or else the stream cant be readed, of course noone audiostreaming games dont need to be alligned so i dont know if all games are alligned by default but audiostreaming games need to be its mandatory for the GC to read the stream.

Yes. All files are supposed to be 32K aligned and be in multiples of 32K if I remember correctly.

Thank you all for the replies.
Reason I asked is because I've always had this "notion" that the WII drive should have 32k clusters. And if that whole "alignment" stuff is actually right that would explain why I made that decision long ago (couldn't remember why I knew, I just did)
FIX, what is this "GC compressor" of yours that you mention?
GreyWolf Hows that GC Verifier/installer coming along? Last time I checked your repo there was only one version (the beta one, with no installer, progress bars etc) It would be AWESOME to have an all -in-one tool. Maybe join WiiBAckupManager and your tool as one...

Speaking of which, where is SonicTopFan? I haven't seen him since a good while. He should have been first saying what you just said

"After exhaustively testing every part of every Sonic game launched on Gamecube on planet earth, he finds every one of them are ok, he giggles to FIX94, and salute GBAtemp saying: 'Mission Acomplished', then he dissapear like a beautiful dying star"

Or something like that c:

Haven't actually tried it yet. Mastermods downloads are broke, and I been too busy monster hunting. Speaking of which, you should pop on sometime

You don't need the mastermods.. and in my opinion it is better to try the original first, and from the homebrew menu.. just to keep it clean...
