The Nintendo 3DS is getting on in years, and yet another reminder of that is the quiet announcement that Nintendo of Japan will no longer be offering repairs for the original 3DS model along with its XL brethren. After March 31, 2021, Nintendo plans to phase out services for those two systems, as sourcing those system-specific parts has become a challenge. Nintendo notes that even if a 3DS system had been sent in for repairs prior to that date, they still may be unable to fix it, should the needed parts be out of stock. For now, this only applies to Japan, and the original Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL models--the New series is unaffected.

Didn't the 3DS officially commercially die like over a year ago?
I know Nintendo put out that spite-patch, but that doesn't count.

God, is the 3ds era really ending? It feels like it's been only a few years since the 3ds xl was new

I could never get my videogame consoles official repairs anyway due to living too far away. In some cases like with my PS1, I had to get an used one when the one I had broke.

Why exactly are they so shit with Joycons but with 10-year-old hardware repairing is no problem?

And some years ago they serviced a Gameboy by giving someone one they had in storage when they couldn't repair the device in question.

    To be fair:

When the Gameboy era ended you could play gameboy games in the Gameboy Color.

When the GBC era ended you could play GBC games on the GBA.

When the GBA era ended you could play GBA games on the Nintendo DS and DS Lite.

And when the Nintendo DS era ended you could play DS games on the 3DS.

You can't, without hacking the Switch, play 3DS games on a Nintendo Switch.

For Nintendo portables is the end of an era.

3DS hasn't come out with any big games for like 2 years now. It's already been dead.
