just a matter of time before servers shut down hopefully they (ninitendo) won't go after the pretendo network when they shut the service down that maybe a few years considering Pokemon bank is still needed to transfer 3ds Pokemon to pokemon home I so wish they allow Ash-Greninja in the gen 4 remakes which I HOPE they announce tomorrow

I hope I never get too old, that the cost wouldn’t be worth the repair.

It's been a long road, my old friend...

Hopefully, they will keep the Switch support active for a little longer!

They discontinued it just now? I thought Nintendo has ended support for the older 3DS models years ago, this really isn't a surprise to me. And it's just the older models, the 3DS is still alive!

They provided service/repair for original Famicoms, Super Famicoms, N64, original Gameboy and Gameboy Pocket until late 2007. This is actually a reverse pineapple up the ass from Nintendo in Japan, compared to their track record for supporting legacy product.

I saw the 3DS and panicked, thinking that all services for it were going to shut down. It took me a minute to realize that it just means that Japan won't be able to repair the early variants. Phew!

Still, unfortunately, the demise is near, and it will always happen when we don't want it to. Simply because we don't want it to. Fortunately, thanks to @Larsenv and his MarioCube repository, one of several archival projects that attempts to keep games from disappearing completely, and the ability to homebrew, we can add the apps that are no longer on Nintendo's servers. :)

To be honest, I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. I stopped repairing them a little over a year ago. The original 3ds is a pain in the ass to work on. I hated every time I replaced the game cart slot for someone. I finally stopped doing that repair, even though it was one of the most common things customers asked about. Not worth the money.

The new 3ds, and 2ds are much more modular. Just about everything is mounted on breakout boards. I have been suspicious that one of the incentives for making the newer models was likely because they were eating it due to repair costs.

It's prolly going to be hard to find someone to repair them at a reasonable price now. Hopefully people will learn the dangers of shoving their game carts in backwards

First off, don't be daft. The 3DS is not dead. There are still new (albeit budget) games produced for it and the servers will be up for years to come (the Wii servers were up for three years after the last Wii was produced and the Wii store is technically still up, though it hasn't been possible to buy new games there since 2018). Also they still service ALL 3DS models (even the original one!) in the US. The New 3DS XL (introduced 6 years ago) will continue to be serviced even in Japan. All this announcement means is that the OLD models of 3DS in Japan will not be serviced by Nintendo anymore. It means nothing at all more than that. Incidentally, it was approximately a year ago that Nintendo made the same kind of announcement regarding Wii repairs, and for the same reason: They had run out of key parts and thus could not continue repairing them. And only a company run by idiots would continue to do service on their systems long after every warranty has expired AND when they have run out of parts to fix them with. It's BS that you think they have some obligation to do so simply because they had enough parts around to do it for the Famicom for so long!

The 3DS was dead to me as soon as the Switch launched. I've only turned mine on a few times since then to help update my friend's 3DS using my SD card's files. I think my firmware is still on 11.7 too, before that awful telemetry patch came in 11.8... My Switch has been my main system for portables since launch day. I just wish it had StreetPass and the built-in RPG, but now that MiiTopia is coming to Switch, maybe it won't be that far off... :creep:

I love my 25th Zelda edition since day one. About the repair service it is ok, in many other industries it is far less than this.
The good news is that if yours die, you will have around you millions of them to take spare parts from ;)
