No you can't. It requires the Wiimote and Nunchuk.

The GamePad is only to be used as a small TV screen.

WRONG! Not on this game, only on games that supported the classic controller. And SMG2 did/does not support the classic controller. So you still have to use the Wiimote and nunchuck to play.

You can sell/lend/trade the physical copy. The eshop one may be a bitch to get back if you replace your system at some point (broken, stolen, upgraded to a successor). Of course this is true of all physical vs download games.

I don't seem to remember the classic being an option for SMG1 --- and wikipedia seems to agree:

certain wii games that used the classic controller are being released for wii u and you will be able to use the wii u gamepad as the controller not just as a screen were you have to use the wiimote and nunchuk, you will actually use the gamepad controls

1) Galaxy 1 and 2 are NOT compatible with the classic controller

2) you can only use the Gamepad as a controller in Wii games that has classic controller support. This does NOT apply to playing that same game in vWii

3) You STILL need a Wii Remote and Nunchuck to play most Wii games

It's $10 as announced in the Nintendo Direct, all things considered, that's pretty damn cheap

Oh yeah I just checked it on the rear cover (a PAL scan link).

I must've mistook it for Sunshine on that Galaxy-themed stage with the GameCube controller (rather than Classic Controller), I think.
