We've got about 87% of the images done so far, out of 1668, which means we have ~200 images that have been translated but not shopped. I'll check with the graphics team and see if they want a hand, and then I can PM you with the graphic editing test to see if you've got the chops for it. :) The test mostly asks you to do things like change some simple text while keeping the number of colors below a certain amount, avoid transparency, stuff like that. Things that a photoshop pro can do, but noobs often screw up and we don't find out that there is a problem until a playtester gets to that part of the game and the emulator just freezes or the screen shows nothing but glitchy shit everywhere. We've found that doing a quick little test upfront means we have to do less supervising after people join the team, which helps us all to work faster.

Still room for more translators, if anyone knows anyone. :)

Okay sounds good, give me a shout if I can be of assistance!

Test makes sense! Sometimes you can do more harm than good if you're inexperienced, which is tough when you're trying to help with something haha. I work full time as a graphic designer so it shouldn't be a problem!

Dang, anyone else wishing they spoke Japanese or knew how to run Photoshop stuff? If I could do anything like that I'd totally ask to help out; unfortunately I don't have those skill sets.

Still rooting for you guys and giving you a thumbs up of encouragement from the corner of the room. I can't wait to enjoy it!

Sounds like we *can* use extra help (~200 images left, as mentioned). If you go to your Profile and choose "Conversations" you should see one from me talking about our quick little photoshop test. :)

Thanks!

when you want to help but you don't own photoshop ;-;
(EDIT: i do have GIMP, and I'd really love to help.)
IIRC Gimp saves and opens PSD files, and we are using fairly simple graphical stuff - no crazy filters or effects. Do you have much experience with graphic editing? We could see if the files you create as part of the graphics test are compatible with the game. PM me your info (experience and an email address - preferably gmail to make doc sharing easier) and we can give it a shot. :)

For those that keep asking what the differences are between the PS3 and DS versions of this story / game, you can check out this awesome Let's Play of the DS game in Japanese. You might not understand the story, but you can check out the gameplay differences:

The game playthrough was finished earlier this year, and I find the gamer to be really easy to listen to. Good, clear pronunciation, and he reads out all of the dialog that doesn't already have audio tracks to it. It is the full game, so even just watching the opening couple of episodes should give you a good feel for the differences between the two, assuming you've played the PS3 game already. If you haven't played the PS3 game, you can find a ton of English Let's Plays out there to compare with. :)

I like to watch the Let's Play for the area / dialogue that I'm currently translating before I start so I can get a feel for the character sprite emotions (sometimes it is hard to tell emotional state from just a "えっ?" or "そんな…" in Japanese with no visual to go with it). Check it out, and hopefully that'll tide you over for a bit longer. :grog:

hey, random question. In terms of audio tracks, is it possible to overwrite some of the japanese tracks with the english ones from the PS3? I'm mostly talking about during/just after battles where Oliver shouts stuff like "NEATO!" (but perhaps the DS doesn't use those tracks or anything similar). What about the anime cutscenes; is it possible the english dub could be placed over that as well?

It may be remotely possible, but it is unlikely that many of the longer cutscenes will have the right timing. We've talked about looking into that, but I think our current stretch goals are getting an English version of the Magic Master put together and some other stuff first before we try to much around with the audio.

The long and short of it is that we still have a long way to go before we're done the main game, so once we've done that we can look at how many people we have, what their skills are, and how much energy everyone still has. :) Nothing is outside the realm of possibility, but probability is another thing entirely.

There are some cheat codes that you could use in an emulator, if you want to do that. Things like getting all the items maxxed and whatnot that could help you with unlocking all the Moya Tower floors. Hopefully Google Translate works well from Japanese to your native language. :) Enjoy!

no way) use cheats is not interesting
so, got it atm, very rare drop, i think you need open more 100+ chest, because NPC send message "140 bla-bla" (my spanish suck), when i'll create new 55F
ps: btw, spanish patch has some shortcomings , fonts difficult to read (menu total stats, 100% subquests, maps, dungeons, etc) and some dialogs are not translated from the original japanese (casino, etc)

so how now add subquests 101-120 (dlc) in the emulator ? there may be a ready rom with?
Pleonex, from the Spanish team, has given our team the DLC data that he personally backed up before the servers went offline. I would assume that the Spanish team would also have the DLC, since they gave us the files, but I'm not 100% sure. If you have any questions about the Spanish patch release, there is a thread here that that team likely still watches:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/ninokuni-shikkoku-no-madoushi-translation-project.310214/
This thread is purely for the English translation, and most people watching and responding to this thread aren't playing the Spanish patch, unfortunately.

Since the topic of "running Google Translate on the game and then cleaning it up afterwards with English editors" keeps coming up, I thought I'd look into it for a small sample of text - just to see what was possible. I was able to actually quite easily write a one line formula that took text that I flagged as Japanese and translated it using Google Translate into English.

This is a full conversation - if you read Japanese, enjoy how completely and utterly this conversation is mangled. If you don't, try to figure out what the heck is going on here and estimate how much time this sort of thing would take you across hundreds and hundreds of conversations.

Well, not really.

Then you'll have your answer as to why we're bothering to take our time to translate things nicely. There are accents / odd speech characteristics in use here, as there is in much of the game, so this is not a contrived example - it is actually fairly representative of the overall corpus. If you put the entire text through some regex magic you could probably make it easier on The Goog, since this has the raw Japanese text including Furigana inside the 【 】brackets. Even still, the first section comes out as:
おう いつまで経っても おつかいから
帰って来ないと思ったら
またこんなところに いたのか。
From even after king forever Otsukai
If you think not come back
Also what it was in such a place.

That block hasn't been translated by our team yet, but I'm sure you can imagine that it won't be as staggeringly incomprehensible as the auto-translated stuff is. :) For those looking at my translation % done stats, each of the above sections of text is considered 1 block, and there are 30,000+ of them in the game, so not simple 1-liners very often.

And hopefully that is enough examples of why translation software is not yet the answer. This should put the concept of a quick Google translate to bed. (^_^)

What about translating the spanish version to english with google translate instead? Since spanish <-> english translations works way better than any asian language <-> english translations with that..

There'd be too much lost in translation when you translate a translation. Also, over 10.5 years and this is your first post?

Yeah, i tried to register and found i must have registered quite some time ago
Of course it wouldn't be a very good translation, but maybe at least somewhat understandable. That way the unedited/nontranslated portions could be google translated and an alpha could be released?

Just want to play/try it some now, not in 2020 :yaynds:

With minimal releases, they are trying to avoid cease and desist letters and people's confusion from older patches, if I remember correctly. They all seem to have the discipline and patience to follow through on their conviction thus far, so I don't see them deviating from that any time soon.

We've been making decent progress lately, and as mentioned many times we'll release it when it is done. It won't ever be perfect, since there is no such thing as a perfect translation, but we think we're doing a better job than any automated translation would do.

Thanks for all the support (and patience) people! :)
