To be precise, I don't care if it's discless, but I do care if it's medialess. I love cart games, so a new Nintendo console with games on cart would be even better than one with discs. I actually remember when I first saw a games console with discs (Playstation 1 probably) and thinking it was really weird. I still kind of feel that way now, and much prefer slotting a cart into my SNES ;)

Even though I wasn't born then. Nothing is more satisfying then popping in Super gouls and ghost into a SNES hah

we still don't know what the NX is, do we? some people have been speculating that it'd be a home and portable console and both would share the same game card.

In that case the only type of cart I could see fitting would be something like the vita's. I'll keep checking for patents on it.

Says nothing about digital only. This seems more about how Microsoft wanted to enhanced things by the cloud and Nintendo wanting to do the same thing. Except they are giving you the device, rather than keeping it themselves. While you maybe able to connect your personal devices and connect through the cloud, I don't think that what this is. You can use your computing device, portable and game console to enhanced your overall gaming experience locally or share you computing device with others.

With this computing device, which I feel should be bundled by default, you wouldn't have to rely on the cloud. You could upgrade your game console without updating the whole device. I would totally share my computing device, if it means getting points or discounts. Probably do it anyway. Lol

Don't want into rely on the cloud? OK, then buy/trade for another or stronger computing device. I'm pretty sure this device wouldn't get stronger or as strong than the actual console and you can only have so many connected to one console. Not only should it be the main console at that point, this is something you could probably keep on the whole time. So you don't want it to easily overheat.

[0024] Interesting, the game console can take any form. I think they are just covering themselves. I mean, I doubt it will be a smartphone...

Again, I think this is something they provide you, rather than using something you already own. This seems to be about getting around the limitations of the cloud. Why would they go digital only?

Also, it could be nothing. :P

I think cartridges are better than discs too.
Discs you can easily get them scratched on accident, cartridges you'll probably always have working fine.
But discs are probably cheaper to produce, and having it spinning in the console with a laser that reads it probably doesn't wear it off as much as using a cartridge does (the pins on my cartridges get worn out after some time and require cleaning so they can work well again.)

Back in the days games saved on the cartridge itself and that was a problem because they used battery-backed SRAM so you'd lose save files eventually (some used flash memory), they could go flash memory or similar for all games like the 3DS has (I know it has eeprom and even nand saves that append the save directly to the rom) but that has limited life, with a console like the ones we have nowadays they can just keep the save files on the console's internal memory or on an SD card like digital games on 3DS do. And then you'd just have to plug cartridge in and play.

Cartridges, those things can take a beating. But discs? A child throws a fit and now the disc is broken in half.

They said it will not be apart of the Wii family name. So I doubt they will make something to enhance something they said this will not be. I think I said that right lol

Just because they've said the system is not a part of the Wii family, doesn't mean it can't have some type of Wii functionality. Specifically, i'm pretty sure Nintendo's next console will be backwards compatible with Wii U games and therefore be able to connect to all Wii and Wii U controllers as well. Its the same kind of mentality of while the DS isn't a part of the Game Boy family, it still had GBA backwards compatibility, or how the Wii could play Gamecube discs.

More than anything, their desire to move away from the Wii family, has more to do with the branding of Wii than anything else. To this day I think many would agree that the Wii U would have had a more successful launch and start if it had simply been titled something else without Wii in the title.

We talking about the Wii U? I dunno, I remember having this discussion a few years ago, I liked a few of the names that crossed my mind: Nintendo (just straight up Nintendo, I think that would have been a bold move, and could have done well, yes I know many refer to the NES as just the Nintendo, but the fact of the matter is that Console's full name was the Nintendo Entertainment System). I also liked the idea of calling it the Nintendo 6. Just to help show that they've been around longer than the current competition when you see that Sony is only on their 4th console right in the name. Of course Nintendo 6 is so similar to Nintendo 64, that I can see that if that was ever something they'd consider doing with Nintendo consoles, the 6th one would be a poor place to start. Nintendo Cross does sound appropriate for what the Wii U does. But I think Cross would need to be stylized as X (as often is the case in Japan), so you'd have the Nintendo X, which of course at this point is what I assume NX is short for, even though that name isn't permanent. I remember other names people came up with like Nintendo Stream (reminds me of peeing, so probably not a good name choice), Nintendo Beam, etc. I dunno, at the end of the day though, my first choice is my favorite choice, I think a great name for the Wii U would have been the Nintendo; I'd have really liked that call. I remember when they announced the name Wii U had been finalized, how disappointed I was in the name choice, I still think it was a very poor console name choice.

I imagine saying "Hey dude want to play the Nintendo" that's pretty bold shit right there haha

Cartridges would be cool.

I seen some people from other sites took "supplemental computing device" as being the handheld. I don't think that is the case.
1) Haven't read anything about it having controls and a display.
2) Wouldn't be able to use the handheld while providing power to the consoles. Maybe still use it as a controller, but then you be stuck on a cord.
Of course you could have it wirelessly, but that's kind of defeating the purpose and the picture doesn't show that.
3) Does not look like a handheld in the picture. It looks like another system, yet it wasn't even called a game console.
4) Not everyone wants portable. They would have to bundle it (cost) or hope you buy the handheld and use it with the console. (Reliability)
5) Don't think it can be a handheld and provided enough power to make a real difference. Probably want to focus on balancing the power between the device and
console and not worry about extra components.
6) A separate device would stay close to a console longer than an handheld would since you probably want to take a handheld with you.

All right, speculation time!

Having been a follower of the NX since it was called the Nintendo Fusion (and still might end up being that for all we know), the boxes are pretty obvious to me.

You've got your big box- that's your game console. You've got your little box- that's your portable console- your "local supplemental computing device", as they put it. But with the Fusion, both systems work together, rather than being a simple master-slave configuration like the Wii U Gamepad largely is. Think a PS4-level processing power system combined with a 3DS.

The difference is in how the systems communicate.

Somehow Nintendo has figured out a way to get a completely lagless method of communication working that allows the systems to flawlessly operate regardless of the distance. So you take your Nintendo Fusion controller on a trip but won't ever worry about having to lug the box, because it will operate wherever.

Thus the additional "supplemental processing devices" are other people with Fusion controllers, and you'll be able to take that Fusion controller and have it interact in unique and interesting ways, such as multiplayer.

That's how I see it, of course. It could just be Nintendo creating a new way of herding cats.

A girl can dream:
NX is a home console capable of running carts for all past generations of Nintendo's games.
It has a second screen to make DS and 3DS games playable all on your HD TV for the best experience. :D
It allows you to play past Wii games online again as well as many other games from previous consoles with NWFC down.
