Gaming Need help overclocking and setting memory clocks

Well, I received a replacement for my ram, and I'm pleased to report that setting it to its advertised speed passed memtest and prime95 for around 24 hours each

Now I proceeded to overclocking, i changed the bclk frequency from 133mhz to 200 which game me a 4.0GHz overclock, but that locked up at the starting windows screen.

I lowered the bclk to 160 which gave me 3.2GHz.. and its stable at around 14 hours (so far) of stress test using prime95

oh ofcourse i changed the ram settings to reflect 1600mhz in both overclocking attemps

Now, temps:
now that I overclocked, on idle its around 33c, while on 100% load (by just running prime95 stress test) it goes up to 54c

Now when I run real temp, i see the temps as 67,69,67,65 (or so)

Are these temperatures fine?
Any other comments of what I have stated?

well i talked to a cooler master yesterday using livechat, and the guy told me that 33 idle and 55 load on a i7 920 overclocked to 3.2ghz is perfect, i just forgot to mention running real temp which gave me the temps mentioned above

so, real temp is showing me something else?

Also the coolermaster guy i talked to said that their coolers throttles at around 100c, which is about what the cpu takes

So is that really how hot my cpu is? or just the cores.. Am I mistaken somewhere?

so what do you think i should do?

55 sounds right.

i'd try some of the other temp reading programs out there. speedfan/coretemp for examle.

Ok here is a screenshot with all of my settings and temp. The CPU temp is at 55c, while each core is around 67c

When I overclocked, I didnt change anything voltage wise. Should I be increasing something? You can see that CPU-Z is currently reporting Core voltage to be 1.235

I'm surprised noone has said anything about thermal compound. Did you apply the proper amount? Either too little or too much will result in heat not being properly transferred to the heatsink.

yes I did, I dont know whats the proper amount though, I think what I put was sufficient (2-3 pea drops maybe?) and spread evently across..

If I open it up I have to wipe it out and reapply again right? I dont have any left..

it depends on which cpu you have because the cores are in different areas

alot of people dont do that what was shown above in the middle
spread it out if what I mean, and it looked to be too much
the pressure from the heatsink should force it into nooks and crannies

I just did he line method down the middle and just put the hsf on

Can anyone tell me if i should be changing voltages (cpu core voltage mainly) after I have overclocked from 2.66 to 3.2 GHz?
I just dealt with changing the bclk and didnt mess with the voltages.

CPU-Z is currently reporting Core voltage to be 1.235.. should i be changing that?

My overclock passes 24+ of memtest and prime95 stress test .. but it fails to pass 20 times of 25000k problems on linx
evga has an i7 stability club on their forums where they test 25000k with 20 passes to confirm stability..

I can see that some raise viltages up to 1.5 (although i think its dangerous to have it above 1.35)

so anyways, any comments? any voltages are needed to be changed when overclocking?

Stability such as that *isnt* so much important imo. just leave it on for a day or two, do what you would with your system as if it weren't overclocked. if it doesnt crash, don't worry about upping voltage. if it does, knock it up to 1.25-1.275. or you can knock it up if you want to increase your o/c.

No 3.2 is enough for me, I'd rather have a longer lifespan than a few more GHz which I probably dont need.

You're probably right about how it isnt much important. I just would have to have it as perfect as possible so that no damages would happen with such instability..

Besides I'm taking this as learning experience as well, its my first time building a PC and I'm enjoying playing with it.

I'll try increasing the voltage to what you have suggested and if its still not stable I'll set it back to auto as it was

Its probably worth to revert the overclocking and see if it passes linx without it as well..

Hey .Radiant, just wanted to let you know that I increased Core voltage to 1.275 and that passed linx 20 passes of 25000k problems, running prime95 now and so far so good, so as far as I can tell its stable

One question though, should I try lowering it abit (say 1.268 for example)?
Would it be more stable? or is it just a temperature thing?
