OoT 3DS is out, many people have beaten it, or have played enough to get a fairly good impression of it. Personally, I'm a third party who hasn't experienced OoT 3DS yet. I've only played through the N64 version multiple times. Now, I know for a fact that this is not a reason to buy a 3DS, and it isn't what I'm asking. Like other LoZ games, and the original OoT itself, it is only really going to be fun one or two times in a row until your appetite for dungeon crawling has been filled for awhile. That is, unless you are one hardcore OoT fan, of which I've run across very few.

What I want to know, and only from people who have played BOTH the N64 and 3DS versions of the game; is OoT 3DS truly a drastic enough improvement to warrant the price tag? Do you feel like you payed more for the name and less for the actual game itself? Are the changes (outside of graphical improvements) good? Do you feel any changes were unnecessary or even detrimental to the overall experience?

I've been curious about this for a few days now and wonder what you guys have to say.

Like I said, I want to only hear from people who can actually outline the differences. If you're just coming in to say "lol this game is soooo good," there is already the LoZ: OoT 3DS thread for that.

I haven't played it myself but I'm pretty sure there's no change besides the graphical improvements (besides easter eggs and Master Quest).

Also, I believe you won't get an objective answer to your question in this forum.

I played it on the N64, and I haven't played any of the other releases since then. So its probably been over 10 years since I played the game. I was REALLY surprised by the 3ds version. The gameplay does not feel dated at all, and the graphics are way better than on the n64. I was especially surprised by the 3d effect. It really works exceptionally well with this game.
I would say that unless you have played the game in the past couple of years and remember everything about it, its probably worth buying.

I just find it silly that people are rushing out to slap down $290 for a 3DS and a game that's over a decade old. Seriously, I don't remember people running out to buy Wiis when it was released on the Wii.

Oh wait, this one has better graphics and THREEEEE DEEEEEEE though. And Master Quest and Boss Rush (aka who gives a fuck).

People amuse me.

Even after not having beaten it for 5 years now, I could still outline the journey fairly well. A game that has received so much publicity and the like is hard to forget.

For any wondering, I'm being selective in my responses. I can get sort of aggressive without meaning to when discussing the 3DS, as some people try to push it as the greatest thing since sliced bread. I figure, to keep the thread on track, I'll avoid answering anything that may cause me to spawn a flame war of any kind. I'm sure it will happen on its own in due time, but I would rather not be the one to do it. :3

You know the system DOES have other games, and it will continue to get more as it ages.

You don't seriously believe that the system was only made to play an Ocarina of Time remake, do you?

The N64 looks decidedly ugly in comparison.

Because it's over 10 years old and even then there are better looking N64 games.

I try to ignore the graphical improvements for that exact reason. It's been over 10 years, and the 3DS is supposed to basically be a portable GC has far as power is concerned. If they couldn't make a game look better than a blocky N64 game, then they don't deserve to release anything.

No, I believe it was made to play Ocarina of Time and nothing else I actually care about. It's basically gonna become a Nintendo-dominated console and third parties will begin to be alienated. They haven't sold the system since launch and I don't think they will in the future.

The system is doing as well as can be hoped for with 3rd party support at this point in time.

Did you think the same thing about the original DS when it came out, or are you just not a fan of the whole 3D concept (I could understand this).

Let's try to ignore the fact that this is considered to be the only game even remotely worth purchasing for the 3DS at this point in time.

An unbiased, "teh 3DS haz no gaems except oot trololo"-less point of view would be fantastic, if not a little unrealistic.

Also, I'm going to say this now GET OUT IF YOU'RE GOING TO ARGUE ABOUT THE FUCKING 3DS AND ITS WORTH.

i've played a decent amount of oot3d, i've also played the older n64 version as well

the game seems overall much smoother. to me aiming with the gyroscope is well implemented

its a good game and i'll probably be playing it for a long time

it could have been cheaper, but for its price its worth it

I just find it silly that people post when they don't know what they're talking about.

I don't know anyone who has bought a 3DS just for this. Even if they were, I HIGHLY doubt they're buying it JUST for OoT3D. It might influence their purchase a lot, but no one in their right mind is going to buy a 3DS, OoT3D, and NO other games at all in the future. Also, no one went out and bought a Wii for OoT on the VC because it's no different than past versions. This one is.

Better graphics, 3D, master quest, boss rush, portability, and nostalgia are the biggest selling points of the game. Just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean tons of others won't.

People amuse me.

Honestly I feel like it's not worth it. I was really excited for it, but ever since getting it during the morning I feel like it was a waste of money. Yes the graphical update is there and it's definitely noticeable, but in this day and age there are still too many things that could have been done so much better. Most of the ground/wall textures look like crummy jpg pictures, and it's really noticeable in dungeons. Pretty much all of the characters are really blocky too, and please don't say it's something about the "art style" or anything because the characters look very far from the artwork. When you add up the music it just feels like a quick cash in that feeds off people's nostalgia.

Never finished OoT on the N64, so might as well get the full experience on the 3DS one. I'll be picking up my copy tomorrow.

I feel like it should have at least included Majora's Mask to make it worth it, especially considering you can buy OoT for only $10 on the Wii. Even then, you could buy both for $20 on the Wii. It never seemed worth it from the beginning, and I guess I was right.

Maybe it's just that we already knew absolutely everything we could going into the game... but I was a tad disappointed that there really wasn't anything truly new to me by the time I started playing.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
