Having been very hyped for SMM on 3DS for ages, I was curious just how good it'd be compared to the Wii U version. But just how good is it?

Overall, it is good! The 3DS does feel like it fits SMM well, and level making on it works well.

Interestingly, though, the interface in general feels a bit less refined than the Wii U version. For example, in the Wii U version, clicking "play" on the title loads instantly into the level maker - in the 3DS port, it fades to black for a second first, which is a bit odd. You also have no way of touching the letters in the logo like the Wii U version, which is a bit of a shame, as that was quite fun. I'm unsure if the fly swatter game remains in, as... I don't have the muncher item yet. I'll edit this once I do.
Seems to me like it's been cut! Shaking a Muncher item doesn't give me any flies...

The included levels are quite fun! A few of them are returning from the Wii U version, some are redone versions of other levels (mostly SMB1/SMB3) and many are all-new.

Gameplay's the same. Themes are the same. Music's the same. Graphics are great, and aside from the quality-reduced NSMBU theme, which looks pretty bad, the rest of the game does look nice on the 3DS! Just about everything is the same as the Wii U version, gameplay-wise.

We know the restrictions for online, of course. No course searching, no course uploading. Once the game's servers are up officially, I'll look more in depth on the online course selection's quantity.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good port. Sure, there's a few missed opporotunities, and the fact that there's missing some online features is a shame, but I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to make some Mario levels, but doesn't own or isn't often using a Wii U. If you are the type of person who is looking to play levels instead of making, I'd heavily suggest the Wii U version over this one, though.

Anyone else who's played it have any thoughts on it?

How do you unlock more course building pieces? Is it the same as in the Wii U version?

Nope, for the 3DS version, you have to play through the "Super Mario Challenge" mode to unlock the parts.

That's an unexpected change. Thanks! I assume the parks are unlocked in a random order?

Is the Super Mario Challenge mode much like the WiiU version? (100 Mario Easy, Normal, Expert, Super Expert) I heard that the levels in these challenges are ported from the Wii U version, is this true?

I can't see any reason they can't in the near future update MM 3DS to have online level uploads etc.

I don't believe so. I believe they are in a specific order.
Super Mario Challenge consists of Nintendo's own levels, and can be played online. You unlock course items from this.
100 Mario Challenge is the online mode that features Wii U levels. As far as I know, you don't unlock anything from it.

I played it for five minuets and turned it off. It's not a bad game. I just knew I wouldn't be interested as I already have the Wii U version. The game reallllly lags, at least on the o3DS hardware when there are a lot of enemies on screen. And yeah, I noticed the fade to black thing as well when you click play in the level editor. As small of a thing that is, it really is annoying for as much as you use that button. A definite pickup though if you don't have a Wii U. Otherwise I would recommend staying away from this title.

I'm currently looking into the game's code, and so far it seems like a lot of the enemies in the NSMBU theme are the same as the original (the models don't appear to be that different), which is one of the reasons why it looks bad on the 3ds.

Can anyone confirm if the play info is merged or is it brand new?

Anything else interesting you find? Any unused content based on removed stuff (uploading, mystery mushrooms)?

I'm currently trying to figure out how to view ctpk files, but after I get over this road bump then I'll check for mystery mushrooms.

EDIT: After looking around the models of the game, I found some evidence to support that mystery mushrooms could return in the future. Currently, there are small files that contain dummy versions of modern mario and the modern mushroom, two items that are inaccessible due to a lack of amiibo support.

TL;DR : Mystery mushrooms are not in the current version of Super Mario Maker 3ds, but could return in the future.

I really hope no one tries the online of the game before the game officially launches.
I'm really hyped for this ever since the moment it got announced. It's basically a legal romhack of the many many maaany SMBDS/SMBWII/U versions we got from the scene. And yes. I know it features SMB, SMB3, SMW and NSMBWiiU super scaled down.

All the game needs is a way of sharing courses that is NOT through streetpass. Be it official or homebrew. imho.

These are what I found while digging through the game

    wait.0.png wait.0(1).png

Compared to the other sprites of mario from the SMB theme, these were just by themselves in seperate files.

Have you tried editing them into the game itself yet?

This is for the Big Mushroom item, not quite Mystery Mushrooms... but it'd be nice to see if it's unused or used. I don't have a 30th anniversary Mario amiibo, though so I can't test...

When I found their sprites, I tried to use my modern 8-bit mario amiibo in the level builder but, it didn't work. However, I had an inkling that it wouldn't work due to the fact that modern mario doesn't have any sprites that allow him to move, jump, swim, or grab vines; only the idle sprite was found.

Makes sense! Would be nice to see if they'll be added in later on.

    Anything else interesting found?
