I finished this last week and decided to post it here (to show off and receive feedback).

It's not -perfect- but it's good enough for me, as this was quite a large project despite how small the NES is.

It's now a two tone red pepper and gloss black mix with a matching controller and new white LED.

First console I've painted. I have before swapped housings for a DS lite and a PSP (original). Can't think of any other physical mods than those two. Tried to do a Wii housing swap but I can't remember what I did wrong, was a while back. I believe I still have the housing for that, may try it again one day.

Looks awesome! It amazes me that his type of option was never released officially, the colours just seem to work so well for the NES.

You say it was a big project, how long did this take? I've got no experience with console case modding so I have no idea :)

I spent the better half of a day spray painting (2 hours sanding, 8 hours painting... Something like that, but I waited 10 minutes between each coat so I did something in between coats like work). Did like 3-4 coats per piece. What took so long was the amount of pieces and doing everything separate.

-NES controller buttons
-Power/Reset button
-The black molding pieces
-Top and bottom half of the console
-Some black bottom piece of the NES
-Controller port thingy
-Controller top and bottom pieces

LED took me no more than 20 mins (straight in swap of soldering)

Didn't clear coat. Tried on a small piece, came out crappy. Had to re-sand and re-paint. Krylon makes terrible spray paint. I've used it three times in the past and I've come to conclusion it's mediocre at best. I'll be trying a new brand next time :P.

Of course I'll be EXTREMELY careful with it, due to no clear coat on it.

The Nintendo(tm), Power/Reset, and the Raccoon Mario are decals. They don't look like it because they're EXTREMELY thin...and it looks amazing this way.

Why not just spray your own instead of buying mine :P? More...rewarding!

But thanks for all the comments :D!

If you want, throw me some suggestions for another NES or SNES. I'm thinking about sometime this summer making another.

I might do Luigi to match Mario. Although it's hard to find artwork for Luigi following SMB1-3 or World....if anyone has any so I can make a black decal out of it, lemme know!

Not going to lie, that's pretty awesome. Why not create a green one for Luigi?

Hahah I'm thinking about it. Here's a rough photoshop of what I'd be making for Luigi:

To make that black decal took me an hour or so. Take photo of image of Luigi in strategy guide, make it all smooth etc. turn it black blah blah.

I'd like to have a Samus decal NES myself with a Metroid logo in the place of the Nintendo trademark logo. Do you have any plans of modding other peoples units for them for cash in the future?

I could, but it would depend. Depends on the fact that the owner knows that I'll be putting a lot of hard work into it and it has a chance of having very minor flaws (like my Mario one) due to limited practice / actual equipment like a real paint gun and air compressor.

That's my main concern really. If no one cared about very minor orange peel (can't see unless your eye is on top of the damn console) than yah, I have no problem painting for others.

That very minor orange peel though is probably because I'm using really shitty spray paint. I've used Krylon Fusion for 3 projects now, and no matter how I actually prep the surface, it comes out...sparkly almost. I can't even say it's orange peel, I think it's in the actual paint itself. At least you only notice it moreso in black. With my Mario, I tried wetsanding the base coat, but because spray paint is insanely thin, it goes right through it way too fast (even with 3000 grit). I messed up one small test piece but I fixed it myself later on.

Anyways, I want to try rustoleum sometime in the future.
