Shigeru Miyamoto is often regarded as one of the fathers of modern gaming, a Walt Disney figure for the industry. BBC Radio 4 introduced him as such, though added a the beginning how parents would much rather their children be reading books than playing games. With New Super Mario Bros. Wii having just released and tearing up the charts worldwide, Miyamoto was humbled that his creations have become as ubiquitous as they have.

“I could never imagine a time when Mario or Donkey Kong would be so popular around the world,” said Miyamoto via a translator. “When I created Donkey Kong, I thought I could sell a lot of arcade machines in the U.S. and around the world, and at that time even though he was a carpenter character, he didn’t have the name of Mario, but that said, I was already thinking I would like to make more use of this carpenter character and appear in as many future games as possible.”

The interview noted that Mario games have a stylized look to them, rather than a “hyper-realistic” look. When asked why that was, he turned the question around as something of a dig on the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

"Our company makes games of several different styles but we always try to be different, whether it's video game or animations there are always trends. For example, in the video games industry, it seems that the majority of companies are heading in the same direction, taking advantage of identical technologies. They are simply trying to be better than their rivals,” explained Miyamoto. "But my idea is pretty different. We try to be unique and different and try not to depend on the techniques of others. We try to be as uniquely creative as possible, and that's got to have played a part in making our games look different."

Compare the 2 last COD's (5 and 6) vs the 2 last Zelda's (Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (or even Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess)). Pretty more different to me.

CoD 5 and 6 were also different in some aspects.
But yeah, every shooter is the same principle if you look at it that way.

nintendo always trys to change and mix it up with there games look at all the zelda games they always had a new and intresting innovation but kept the same bone structer also. Look at mario sunshine the look at mario galaxy there completly diffrent sure they have minor simalarities but there diffrent. metriod prime 1,2 n 3 where sequels ofcourse there gunna be the same. any way miyamoto is very intelligent and creative alot of what he says is true, games now have become graphic whores and actuly forget about fun and creativity. A good example is crysis 1 of the most dull game iv played yet its very pretty but still id rather have something fun then something that looks good.a

Crysis was indeed a terrific looking game, but it was also innovative in my book because it was the first game to introduce that Nanosuit thing and total destruction of buildings.
Both those things really made it stand out for me, next to the superb graphics of course.

What's really funny is that Miyamoto understands that creativity comes from the mind of the creator. He didn't depend on graphics to make the game look better but the originality and uniqueness cause his games to stand out and become icon wonders.

What I do like is that he didn't 'think' he will become an LEGENDARY game designer, he just felt that people will appreciate his games and that's it. Never realizing his broad ideas will get him this far and that many of the franchises of today still look forward to Miyamoto's next Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and etc game.

Though honestly, I like how he thinks being different is better than outclassing rivals. It makes sense.

You forgot Pokemon.
I keep doing the same things over and over, and it gets tiring.
