“The reason Mario is a plump shape is because gaming devices at that time could only read collisions between square boxes, not because I wanted to make him cute. His design turned out like that because I adjusted for the capabilities of the gaming device of the day. For example, resolution was low, so I made his face big. But today's game consoles can handle collisions with round or irregular shapes.” - Shigeru Miyamoto

Excerpt from Iwata Asks

It seems quite a lot of aspects of Mario are due to hardware limitations (e.g, overalls, hat and moustache)

Another of those little fun facts about Mario, though I never knew he's was chubby because of hardware limitations.

That's a lie. Mario's fat because he's Italian and he loves his spaghetti with he's momma's homemade ragu!

Maybe it is the other way around.

Maybe they made him Italian because he was fat...

Yep, he has said things like this before about how Mario came to be...it's kinda funny!

I'd move this to GCD but whatever...

Read this earlier today and chuckled. A thin Mario wouldn't have been the same.

Wait...so is the reason Link looks cool because Zelda 1 was played from a top-down perspective?
Make sense...

They probably why they even did a top-down perspective, to make him look cool.

What made them make Luigi skinny? Is it because they couldn't with Mario or just plan wanted him to look distinguish(as if green clothes wasn't enough

).

Funny and interesting info tho.

Back then, Luigi was just a palette swap of Mario with a green color scheme.

Yes, I mean think about it.
The original Super Mario Bros, his sprites in it.
Regular mario is exactly one tile tall, and Super Mario is two tiles tall.
