Hacking Mix and Match Ds replacement shells?

I am buying the crimson red dragon ds lite replacement case from dealextreme.com
and i was wondering if you can mix and match pieces from a original ds lite
with the replacement ones because i want to retain the original ds back because
it is glossy and i know the replacement will not be.

Also would it be easier to just replace the top of the Ds with the replacement
top sorta like the hybrid color ds's that are in stores right now. Or do you still have
to take the ds lite apart completely and risk breaking cables just to replace top.
