Hey smealum,

Nice work on this port, it is looking pretty sweet. I've been keeping tabs on this thread for a while now. its nice to see progress.

my question to you should you wish to answer it is: what language are you using to port this? and what other things are you using? i'm doing a degree in computer science therefore i am consistantly learning new languages. i'd love to be able to offer my knowledge to you or try my hand at homebrew for the DS myself. i really dont know where to start though. knowing which language your writing this in and what your using to do it would help though!

thanks,

Euden
Thanks.

For this project (and all of my other projects really), I'm coding in C, with libnds to do DS-specific stuff obviously.

(if you don't know, libnds is bundled with devkitpro, so all you have to do to start doing DS homebrew is install devkitpro)

OK, I've just had an idea for a new control scheme:

The bottom screen would have the world on (rather than the top screen which currently has it) and you use the stylus to rotate - wherever you point the stylus, the middle of aim would jump to.
Then, you would have 2 option to change to the 'block selection' view. You could choose between:
  • Holding down A/B/X/Y which would switch the screens (world view on top, block selection on bottom) for as long as you hold down A/B/X/Y. You then use the stylus to choose your block / craft etc.
  • There would also be a small button overlayed on top of the world view (showing an arrow or w/e) which you could tap with the stylus and achieve the same results as the A/B/X/Y method above.

Then, the control scheme would be:
D-pad = Up / down / left / right
L trigger = Place block / Remove block (change using another overlayed button)
Double tap = Jump

I hope all that made sense.....
I'll look into it as soon as I start working on the controls, thanks for the suggestion.

But the background could be a different color, or even an image of some sort....i'm just saying, black is a bit "heavy". Maybe i'm not making my self clear, what i'm trying to say is that, the game is all about colors and everything, and then you have a black "frame" around the inventory...it's just a bit "out of context".....
Oh most definitely, right now I'm only using this inventory image as a test.
tongue.gif
As I said already, the inventory screen isn't even going to be the "main" bottom screen thing, since it would interfere with using the stylus to aim.

What about strafing? Maybe you should put an Option Page, and Change Controls Page?
Strafing will be in the default control scheme; as of now there is no strafing simply because it makes debugging certain situations easier.

Questions to the creator:
1) Will Minecraft DS allow for skins and graphical themes?
2) What about Wi-Fi servers?
3) Will there be any new mobs that differ from the mobs in normal Minecraft?
4) What about mods?
1) Yes, it supports standard minecraft texture packs.
smile.gif

2) Maybe. Handling multiplayer on classic mode and on small maps (meaning 128*128, the size of the latest demo's map) would be very easy. Bigger maps I don't think I could do though.
3) I don't think so; I'm not even sure about survival right now.
tongue.gif

4) It's definitely not possible to handle mods from the real minecraft if that's what you're wondering, and I don't plan on making a mod API. I guess I might release the source code at some point and people would be able to do whatever they want with it, but I can't tell for sure right now.

QUOTE(Bmcs @ Jul 26 2011, 09:13 PM) Maybe just having a second screen with block information...i think that information is never too much, so...like this?

^Type: Solid Block
Tool:

Besides, these are just ideas, we don't know if they are conceivable...
It does look nice, but I don't think it would be very useful, especially considering that right now there aren't any tools, and there won't be until I start work on survival.
smile.gif

(now that I think of it, the same could be said for the hearts/armor/bubbles since they aren't in Classic

Obviously this would be really easy to do, and yeah, it is easier on the eyes... Maybe I should make it an option ? Thing is, getting my little cube icons to work was a bit of a pain in the ass so I don't want to throw them away

@Wifi
Could it be possible, to generate a large map and then place it on both flashcards to load? After playing, the world will be saved on both? Would this be possible?

Nevertheless, you can always give a chance to our ideas for when you start working on Adventure mode...

The thing is, everyone is excited about your project

As you said, you're just working on classic version, so, maybe we should stick to that for now....

It's going to have a main menu?

If it haves a main menu, it could be like this.

30s7vdc.jpg

Also, if it haves a main menu, you can put the aleatory message under the name? It's hard?

That should not be very hard. He can Count the lines of a txt in which are all the message (like in real minecraft) and load them as a text output with a random line value^^

3) Alright.
4) That's fine, but would you consider polling the players about a handful of mods for normal Minecraft, and whichever is picked the most gets added into the game (depending on if you can get permission or not)? I don't mean big stuff like the Aether mod... But simple stuff like the baby animals mod or the keyblade mod or the builders mod. If that's even considered simple.

...Oooh ooh I forgot a question on my last post. Will you be removing Herobrine soon?

This is getting better and better.
As for multiplayer, would it be DS-Wireless too? I don't have Wi-fi and my little sister loves Mine, eh, DSCraft.

So yea, keep up the good work and the creeperness.

- PS. Ain't progammers awesome? They can create anything they came up in mind, thats why I want to be a progammer now or then XD

Having recently made a control scheme for Minecraft on PSPdisp (lets you control your PC with your PSP), I have a control scheme suggestion. My posts tend to get a bit wall-of-textish, sorry for that.

Wouldn't it be simpler to put the world view on the bottom screen, and allow camera rotation by sliding the stylus? That way you could use the D-Pad for movement (and strafe wouldn't be necessary since you control the camera separately), L/R for sneak/jump (since those are the two things you need when moving, the shoulder buttons would be perfect) and you could use the Picross 3D control scheme for adding/removing blocks (e.g. hold B and touch a block to remove it, and hold A and touch a block to place it; B and A are commonly associated with cancel and confirm respectively). Since you're already using your left hand for camera control the A and B buttons are easily reached. X could be used as the menu button (to swap screens) and Y for whatever. The reason sneak would be L and not R is because you normally use sneak for building, and holding the stylus, A/B and R at the same time is pretty hard. You could also easily swap this entire control set for left-handed people.

Slide touch screen: move camera
Up/Down: move forwards/backwards
Left/Right: strafe left/right
L: sneak
R: jump
Hold A and touch: place block
Hold B and touch: remove block
X: swap screens (to access the menu)
Y: ? (pause menu?)

The main benefits of using the touch screen for camera control are that you can at the same time move the player and camera, plus it feels more natural if you've played the PC version. If you combine it with the Picross 3D control scheme you could place/remove blocks while moving, which is important for building large structures, and aiming becomes a lot easier since you wouldn't need to place the crosshair on the target block first. Also, you won't have to resort to funky button combinations for other important features. It's a tight control scheme, but I think it would work.

So far what you've shown us looks awesome, and being able to use standard terrain.png files sounds amazing. Good luck!

Just a quick "announcement" : I've setup a paypal donation button on my website.
Now please don't get upset and read this : <b>the game is still and WILL ALWAYS BE FREE</b>. I'm not doing any of this for profit, and I'm not begging for money or anything. I only put this in place in case some people feel they have some excess cash and wouldn't mind helping me. I'm a student and I have no source of income; coding this stuff takes time so I hope you understand. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
<a href="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=5UB49EHK6UXHS" target="_blank"><img src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donate_LG.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
Thanks to anyone who'll consider donating a little something. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> (and no, I'm not going to hate you for not donating <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />)

Of course it'll have a main menu. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> It's just not the thing I'm most concerned with at the moment. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
And yeah, I'll try to have it look as close to the original's menu as possible, but keep in mind I can't use the "Minecraft" name or the game's textures !

1) Well considering there is no multiplayer at the moment (and there is no hand model), player skins would be pretty useless. I really can't tell you if there ever will be any as I don't know myself. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> As for the bottom screen, putting armor icons over the character would be easy, but I can't tell you when/if I'll do it. (again, I don't know)
4) Might consider doing that once the game is actually playable. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> So yeah, maybe, but not before quite some time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
5) Of course, I did that like two weeks ago <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=3796967:date=Jul 27 2011, 06:00 AM:name=Furiizaa)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Furiizaa @ Jul 27 2011, 06:00 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=3796967"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->This is getting better and better.

I suppose it would be possible, but talking about such things at this point would be pretty irresponsible of me considering I don't actually *know* what I will/won't be able to do on the multiplayer front. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Not sure having the world view on the bottom screen is the best idea as the stylus would block out the view. (which is why most/all FPSs on the DS have the 3D view on the top screen) Also, think about it, pressing A/B while also using the D-PAD to move around AND the stylus to choose blocks ? Doesn't sound to comfortable to me, but then that might just be because I only have two hands. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
Anyway, I'll take it under consideration. I can understand if some people want to have the 3D view on the bottom screen, and I could easily make Select swap the screens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

It's true that right now I'm only working on getting classic to work, but I haven't ruled out the possibility of making a limited version of Survival in the future. So I guess the answer to the original question is : maybe. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Eeeeh, not really. I mean, I did work on it but I don't have much to show for it. Main thing I did was fix an annoying glitch that would make part of the world flicker when the map was streaming. That bug is no more and playing the game is much nicer now as a result. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
A part from that I fixed some stuff which will help debug more efficiently, but nothing too interesting from a player perspective I guess heh.

Thanks Bmcs, yes, I did already fix that. It was a stupid mistake (basically I'd forgotten to change one line of code when I made my new rendering system four weeks ago, and that caused a massive memory leak... but as I said, the leak has been plugged since then so there is no random crashing anymore <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />)

Smealum, do you want to keep the same colors for the main menu? I mean, you can't use the same icons, the same textures, the same text, etc....but i think that using a brown base color won't be a problem, right?

Is this your site smealum:http://smealum.net/? I'm a little at doubt since it is in french or something like that.

Also, do you have any site to reccomend me to start homebrews? I'm a total beginner, but i'm thinking in entering the programing world by the nintendo DS.

Is this your site smealum:http://smealum.net/? I'm a little at doubt since it is in french or something like that.

Also, do you have any site to reccomend me to start homebrews? I'm a total beginner, but i'm thinking in entering the programing world by the nintendo DS.
Smealum is from France, look at his flag.
