Homebrew Minecraft DS (in 3D !)

Well, we all figured this might happen. I just got a message from Daniel, who works at Mojang. Basically, he's not asking me to stop the project, but he does want me to change the name and use different textures. Of course I don't want to cause any trouble so I'm going to do just that.
It is a bit of a shame since the game did look pretty good with the original's textures, but I can't really do anything about that.

Because of this, I have taken down the demo that was previously available for download in the first post. I will only be uploading a new one once I have new textures.

So anyone who has ideas on where to get some nice copyright-free textures, or actually willing to create textures specifically for this project is welcome.

As for the title, I'm thinking of simply calling it MCDS. Suggestions ?

Yeah, I was thinking about using a pack like that. The one you linked to looks really cool !
I guess the best thing to do would be to provide direct support for any terrain.png file the user provides. In the meantime though, I guess I should contact the people behind one of those texture packs and ask if it's ok for me to use it as the default textures. (I don't see why they wouldn't allow it since the pack is distributed for free, but still, I'd rather not anger any more people

And the name "MCDS" is good enough. My suggestion would be "BlockCraft".

BlockCraft is very good. You want a name that communicates that the game is Minecraft.

Other ideas:

HD textures are not originally supported in minecraft (you need to use something like MCpatcher..) and probably wouldn't be easy for the DS to handle it. Some 16x16 texturepack seems to be a better way.

One of my favorites is the Jolicraft texturepack from andrejolicoeur ( http://www.jolicraft.com/ ). You can find it at the Minecraftforums too.. where you can customize it before downloading if you want (recommended).


My name suggestion is DsCraft ...good and simple ...but use it before another guy do

You would need to convert the terrain.png into one of the ds's texture formats:

2 4-Color Palette Texture

5 4x4-Texel Compressed Texture
6 A5I3 Translucent Texture
7 Direct Texture
It could just be a 1 time thing and have it save into your own file format though.
Also how is it managing culling out unseen blocks?
Does it only render blocks touching air?

Edit: Here, I edited the one you had posted and had it use Eld's textures.

Yep, I asked him for permition and he granted it so long as it's not for profit. So eldpack will be the default texture pack for this project !

Yeah, no problems there, I know what texture formats the DS takes.

And yeah I'm thinking converting the terrain.png the first time it's loaded would be the most efficient way to handle texture packs.

Basically, yeah, I only draw blocks' visible faces. But I also have a more complex algorithm in addition to this in order to only draw what's on screen.

Anyway, I did a little work on the project (still no "official" name, though I kinda like DScraft) yesterday (hadn't really done anything in a week...heh), and I added stuff like basic weather (well... clouds really) and day/night cycle. I don't have any screenshots showing the sun/moon, but I do have some showing off the new textures !

(the grass's color is a little off though, sorry about that)
You might not really see it in these screenshots but I also have better terrain generation now, including better trees and such.

Call it TempCraft xD.. or go with DarkStrikerCraft.. I dont mind it at all!
But i got a question. Doesnt Lamecraft use the textures from Minecraft itself?
If not, why not ask the creator of Lamecraft to use the same textures? Well i believe 100% that those textures is from minecraft itself.
