Anyone get errors with the new mig firmware? I was testing 1.2.1 on my switch 1 and it gave me the card could not be read error as I was changing between games, always as I was changing to (torrent) mario kart 8. No big deal, i deleted it and it hasn't done it since.

Slim have you gotten any errors?

No, only when I completed the update it errored and I reinserted the card but I believe that is normal.

They really are on this shit.

Quick question from someone who did not read the all thread:

Is there any indication that Switch 2 games can be playable with the MIG either via a new MIG firmware update or on a new revision of the MIG hardware itself? Or Switch 1 games is as far as the MIG can go?

Yes - if they crack the card logic chip and get the keys to the safe, but currently no, and it will be a longgggggg time.

I really found it odd that they can run Switch 1 games but not Switch 2
I mean why wouldn't Nintendo make Switch 1 games on Switch 2 have the same protection as Switch 2 games?
Must be a technical reason that makes Nintendo unable to do it.

A little bit of context.

Nintendo actually created a pretty much flawless system with the Switch 1. Read comments by SciresM; the kernel is basically exploit-free.

The Switch 1 is unhackable via software (softmod). The reason why it got hacked was because of NVIDIA, not Nintendo.

An analogy:

Imagine Nintendo creating the most secure safe (safe box) ever. But by a simple rookie mistake, NVIDIA left the keys attached to the safe. That's the reason it was hacked. This is the original paperclip hack.

So Nintendo and NVIDIA removed the key and sealed the keyhole (Mariko revision), but for very technical reasons, they can't change the internals of the safe, only remove the key and seal the keyhole. So, that's why a modchip was created. You are basically opening the sealed keyhole, and reinserting the key. This can't be changed on the original Switch 1.

Switch 1 games are encrypted, and the encryption keys are inside the safe. That's why games can be dumped, but most importantly, decrypted.

Now, for the Switch 2, they keep using the same unhackable software. So, a softmod is highly unlikely. But now NVIDIA created tons of safety measures to avoid the same mistake on the hardware. They basically created a new kind of safe that doesn't use keys anymore (just an analogy), and not only that, but there's no documentation about what they created.

Switch 2 games are encrypted with new encryption methods and keys, and can't be dumped/decrypted until a hack of the Switch 2 happens first. Well, maybe they can be dumped (raw data), but it's useless data without a way to decrypt them.

And sincerely I doubt it will be hacked.

the only switch 2 games you can get to work with it are the ones that have switch 2 upgrades. like i got the upgrades for botw, totk, and no mans sky so now the switch 2 version loads when i insert my mig

Because those are actual Switch 1 games on a red case.

Check the serial numbers on the cards. Those games should start with LN. Those games are basically Switch 1 games with the Switch 2 update included in the cartridge.

LN cards work in both Switch 1 and Switch 2 systems. You basically dumped Switch 1 games (expected normal behavior).

the upgrades i have are downloaded from the eshop and on my sd card. the xcis i have on my mig are regular switch copies that have been out for years.

apparently hogwarts legacy will behave the same way if you use the regular switch version and go into a menu to get the $10 upgrade

Yes, the technical reason is that the switch 1 cart protection was cracked a while ago... they changed the switch 2 encryption / keys, there is no current way to get around it. Possibly ever unless it gets cracked again.

Fundamentally, I believe they work the same way, however because we don't have a way to mimic the switch 2 cartridge authentication / decrypt the games, we will never have this ability...

Give it at least a few years, if you're lucky...
