"IllumiRoom envisions a next-generation gaming console with a projector that sits on your coffee table and surrounds your television with projected light,"
"The LED is projecting for a frame and then turning it off and Kinect IR is reading those layovers," said Rudder. "Then the Kinect turns off for a frame and then the projector goes on and then Kinect will go back and forth."

What good reason? If you're talking about porn... THAT is a good reason to make it! Holographic strippers FTW!
HD projectors are pretty damn expensive last time I checked - that's one reason. In fact, a good HD projector with a fast refresh rate costs as much - if not more, than a Next Generation console will. You're looking at a +/- $500 expense here. Add that to the cost of integrating Kinect 2.0 technology into the device and woo-hoo, pretty steep price point.

I feel ya. I was just being goofy with my post. I'm under no illusion that this technology will be anywhere near cheap. IF and I mean IF Microsoft decides to sell this at a loss it will still equal a pricey console and could also be a game changer.

It looks cool, but I feel as if it'll be extremely distracting with other furniture in the room and only useful if you're using a completely blank wall; it felt a bit uneasy on the eyes when I was just watching that video, to be honest. :/

More than that, it distracts the player, at times, from the games themselves. Immersion breaking out the ass: the game developers can not only force obtrusive HUD elements and objective reminders in your face--now they can set real compass points in your vision outside your TV to always let you know you need to play the game how they want you to. AMMO HERE, COVER HERE, OBJECTIVE HERE, GO HERE.

Strobe lights? Better prep the EMS teams, 'cause gamers be going spastic and be having seizures and whatnot. Plus you'd have to get a projector on top of the the console, and a big enough room to project in.
