I've noticed lately that we've been getting a crap ton of bots coming to the site. Not just advertising ones about shoes or shit like that, but also some porn bots posting too. And while they get reported, I have to suggest this:

I suggest that signing up to the site be unavailable for a while. I know it might be bad for the site in terms of ads and shit, but I'm sure there's enough people on here who are able to support the site.

The reason why I think it would be no problem is because it will easily prevent bots from posting, and majority of the people who sign up to this site, they only do a few posts and then never hear from them again.

And what is wrong with porn? Unless its gay porn of course, then I say someone here finds out where the guy lives, and i'm sure we can take care of it without stopping ppl from registering to the site....

Porn doesn't belong on this site, and this was retro porn and it was providing links and images. Also don't discriminate against gay porn. But even then, I don't know how these forums work, but I'm pretty sure if porn was posted on here, it could get the site shut down.

I agree. Although perhaps instead of barring registration, a much more aggressive form of bot detection could be implemented in the registration process?

Infact, does GBATemp even use a captcha?

Disabling new registrations is a bit drastic, In reality better antibot systems in place would be better.

As far as I remember you dont have to confirm your email (Could be wrong on that) but the captcha on registration is clearly not strong enough

I was going to go off and ask what type of retro porn it was and why would anyone make a bot to advertise it, make a joke about you liking gay porn, but I think that this will get much more funny if I do not. Also I am sure that the mods probably saw this themselves and are already handling it But I am sure gbatemp uses quite a bit of bandwidth and that closing registration would also pretty much kill it. Or would it increase profit due too more ppl seeing ads, now thats a good question that a mod could possibly answer.

Use the IRC Trivia bot as a captcha when signing up. Problem solved. Real humans can always use Google to find the answer.

Erm no, it isn't like we are getting swamped by bots to the point that we cant deal with it. The life expectancy of a bot on here is a few minutes at the most and sure we get a handful a day and some of those are porn bots but we are nowhere near at the point where we would even consider disabling registrations. Costello is working on some better anti bot measures and in the meantime the best thing any of you can do is just report a bot when you suspect one. Closed.
