Both.

If the Wii U was getting the next true entry to the Mario games (the successor to Galaxy 1 and 2), then I'd have more trouble making that call. It isn't, though, so I don't.
New Super Mario Bros. U isn't a true entry in the 2D Mario games?

I'd say no. The NSMB games (at least the ones I've played) feel more like an offshoot or spin-off than a true followup to something like Super Mario World.

Now, they are by no means bad, but I think that they're a bit lackluster when compared to other Mario titles (2D and 3D). It just doesn't feel like Nintendo brings their A game to the NSMB series.

Funny, because most people considering the games of the NSMB series better than the original 2D titles. Better level design, better gameplay, better power-ups and themes, yeah. And comparing Mario Galaxy to a game like NSMBW is just stupid.

I'm getting both, but if I had to choose one it'd be Mario.

The level design in NSMB2 is every bit as good as that of classic 2D Mario--if there's a flaw, it's that the graphics should be more like Rayman (drawn instead of polys), which I think is where a lot of people banging on NSMB get hung up since the NSMB games look a lot more sterile than their 2D forerunners.

"Most people"? Really? I don't think that consensus is as common as you think it is.

As for your second point... no. Obviously the gameplay differs, but basic questions like "How fun is it?" or "Do I feel like I have to keep playing?" still work as points of comparison.

Than most people are retards. Honestly, Super Mario World just destroys anything NSMB. It's not even a fair comparison. It's like the 6' tall 200 pound 12 year old bully picking on a black handicapped kid in a wheel chair who can barely talk without taking breaths every 2 seconds (props to whoever gets that)

But for me, I'm going to have to go for Mario. I love Origins, but I felt the controls were just a little bit off for me. Maybe it's the gameplay or whatever in Mario that gets me, but I'd go for that.... assuming I can't get both, but since I can, fuck it.

"PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS IF THEY DON'T LIKE WHAT I LIKE!" How's that nostalgia going for you?

SMW is a bit overrated. Yeah, I want the NSMB series to take after that over SMB3, and I think SMW is the best 2D Mario before the 2000s, but games like NSMBU already kicks its ass in its own game.

And your analogy is really dumb.

Considering that 2D Mario and 3D Mario has different standards, value, and content, yes, making any comparison is stretching and really stoopid.

Do you HAVE to start an NSMB-defense argument in EVERY THREAD? We already have at least one user restarting the same old argument in other threads (who I won't name)

Not really. They're both platformers, albeit on a different plane. Both using the same IP, same art, targetted at the same audience. One can be judged as better than the other quite easily. It's not apples and oranges, it's more like empire apples and granny smith apples.

Also I do find it ironic that you criticize ShadowSoldier for saying "people are idiots" then call Gahars' comparison "stupid". Pot, kettle, etc.

Anyway it's good to see I'm not the dramamonger here.

I'll get both, since I think both game have their benefits though If I had to choose I would go with NSMBu, simply because I like the gameplay a bit more.

But Rayman Origins was fantastic so you can't go wrong with the sequel, especially in multiplayer I think. What I like about Rayman Origins is that it is a bit more parcour-like because doing things as intended by the developers is very rewarding. But if you are not in parts of the game were you hold right and do stuff like running walls and swinging wines the plattforming can get kinda frustrating at times... Still a good game as I said.

@DonnyKD

Well, wading through your post, I will at least say that you're right about the difference in standards between NSMB and the 3D Mario games - the standards for NSMB are particularly lower.

In all honesty I kinda felt like the NSMB games feel like digital distribution-worthy titles. I mean they just feel kinda like tile packs and a level editor. I mean if you compare the production values between the 2D and 3D games in recent memory, there looks like a huge discrepancy. Mario Galaxy gave us gorgeous visuals (for any console really, not just for the Wii), a grand orchestral sound track, epic scenery, new and diverse settings. I mean even the name sounds grand. We went from a world to a fucking galaxy. That's pretty big and it shows. It felt very daring, very original, Nintendo didn't feel like it was playing it safe.

NSMB, it just feels a bit stale, and at a $60 price tag (as Wii U games are $60), I don't see it. Nowadays I pay $10 for a variety of "indie" platformers that have a lot of style and charm to them. Maybe all aren't focused around level design but levels are hardly what make a game. I loved Rayman Origins (as I'm a bit notorious for) but even then I paid $20 for the game. And it oozed newness. Ubisoft investing this much into a retail 2D platformer is risky to say the least. Building an entirely new engine for 2D graphics that are second to none, taking all this time to craft what felt like the first true AAA 2D platformer for consoles in years.

NSMB, it's not bad by any means, it's just safe. It's like vanilla ice cream. Vanilla ice cream isn't bad, it's just vanilla. There's nothing inherently special to it and it's not unexpected. But I don't always want vanilla ice cream. It's always there as a go-to ice cream, you know what to expect and it's never really bad. You just want to try something new, something daring, and something original. Rayman Origins is like... I dunno, a really good ice cream with a lot of awesome stuff in it.

Personally, I would never, ever buy a console for a 2D platformer, let alone pay $60 for a new 2D platforming game. The genre is great and everything but in the $60 retail category you're competing with games that generally feel like higher production values, longer playtimes, and just deliver more on a lot of fronts. The indie community will keep the genre alive and digital distribution will keep it flowing, but retail wise? I don't see it happening.

I will admit that NSMBU looks shit tons better than the other NSMB games, I'm excited for it. The only thing I don't like about it though is the music, I hate the NSMB music. But the game also needs challenge.
And FYI, it's scientifically proven that SMW >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NSMB

Also, my analogy was amazing. It caused orgasms for multiple people, I'm sure of it.

Why must you always make me hungry? :P

Anyway, I know this doesn't apply much to the original NSMB on the DS, but I feel the NSMB games really don't shine at all except when you get to multiplayer. Sure, as typical, one-player Mario experiences, they can come off as in-the-box "safe" Mario games. If there was ever a definitive "mainstream" Mario title, it would be the NSMB series.

That said, i think NSMB shines best as a multiplayer game, like NSMBWii. The "safe" mechanics, powerups, and level design work perfectly for a 2 to 4 simultaneous multiplayer experience. That's quite likely the reason that flying abilities in NSMBWii were limited to the propeller hat and there were barely any "upper half" platforms high in the sky, except for good the ones accessed by vines and pipes: That wouldn't have worked well for single-screen multiplayer.

In other words, I think playing NSMB in one player is like playing Super Smash Bros. or Mario Party by yourself. Sure, it can be fun fighting CPUs and doing Subspace Emissary playing mini games against the CPUs, but it honestly gets stale and boring after a while. Like Smash Bros. and Mario Party, NSMB is truly meant to be a multiplayer experience.

Definetly Rayman Legends.
Origins was awesome, it felt unique, fresh, and is one of the best 2D platformers in the last decade in my opinion.
NSMBU looks more of the same, I don't want to say the same things that I already said a thoushand times.
I think I just made my point pretty clear, you may not agree, but you already know my point of view.
