I know; I wasn't sure what housed the bootrom; like if it has it's own chip or something.

It is just a section of the normal NAND though right? That should have enough space to etch in 512 characters in some form
The bootrom is on a chip of it's own, I'm fairly sure.

No, the bootrom is stored in the phyisical memory on the arm11 and arm9 SoCs.

Figured it was either that (after thinking it had it's own chip as it's the first thing loaded) or some sort of mbr thing on nand or another region locked, hidden partition on nand.

Anyway, easier way to do it: turn your 512 characters into a QR code; create a tiny sticker and put it there.
