Glad you like it! :) That's the first true JRPG that I played and really enjoyed after Pokemon left a sour taste in my mouth (I still like Pokemon RBY, but in retrospect it's dawned on me what a horribly designed RPG it is in so many aspects). I seriously was like "WHAT'S THIS? JRPGs can be GOOD???" lol

I hate always getting into this argument but Pokemon, on the contrary, is probably one of the best design RPGs for its platform and such. I'm not trolling here, I'm being dead serious.

It's not meant to be overly complicated or long winded like standard turn-based RPGs. It's designed to be a great portable game. Battles are quick, it's easy to pick up, you can save anywhere, and dialogue and cutscenes are short, making it the perfect pick-up-and-play RPG. I can understand why some people would get sick of it after all these years of minor improvements but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

On a Pokemon note, I'll suggest Monster Racers and Dragon Quest Monsters. The former is a shameless Pokemon rip off but uses sidescrolling racing instead of turn-based battles, making it a pretty interesting hidden gem, and the latter is a more full-fledged 3D Pokemon-esque RPG, but with Dragon Quest crap. There's also no random battles (if I recall correctly) so I guess that's a plus.

If you are lookig for good rpg's i'm not including pokemon, but i would highly recommend Dragon quest IX, Blue dragon awakened shadow, digimon dawn/dusk and digimon story super xros wars red/blue (hard to play because there is no english in the game so you have to guess pretty much)

hmm

- From the Abyss (DS) (Action RPG)
- Alundra (PSX) (Action RPG) easy to emulate in most modern pc's
- Tales of Innocence (DS) (Action RPG) decent story, characters.

Quoting this because you need to play it based on what you've liked and don't like.

- No random encounters
- JRPG with that old style RPG charm
- Great characters
- Voice acting (when it happens) is awesome, you have that 2000 dub nostalgia.
- Just play it.

And if you like it, buy yourself a PSP and get The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

I definitely recommend Dragon quest IX, there are no random encounters unless you get seen by a monster and it catches you before you run, same with dragon quest, it has a very good storyline that sucked me in, i couldn't put the game down, but in terms of gameplay it has a very smooth battle that goes in turns, where as blue dragon is more of a mash a to attack system

I understand that argument, and I think you're right. Although I should make it clear that I never truly played much of any Pokemon game after Generation 1. For me, the problem was the grinding. There were 151 Pokemon, and how many of them you could only find at a WAYYYY lower level than most of your other pokemon were at the time? It was just irritating that you were expected to level up DOZENS of pokemon, but could only use 6 at a time. But, perhaps that's improved over time. I wouldn't really know since I haven't really played any of the newer ones.

The other thing I dislike is the lack of advancement in the series. Why is it that 15 years after series release, a brief shake of the sprite and the brief flickering of another sprite is considered an acceptable "tackle" animation? It's just ridiculous to me.

i used to go out to the recycling center every couple weeks and look at the crts and other electronics people would drop off. Usually screens were broken or severely scratched from being tossed around. Did find a good one here and there, but never anything like a 1080i widescreen crt.
