ROM Hack Looking for info on DS anti-piracy

I'm just looking to have a quick read about how some of the anti-piracy measures on the DS worked. for example there's two CRCs for the Chrono trigger ROM [1e80f7c8] [b3836946] - the first one has some sort of 'crack' and the second is a clean dump. I know there's a lot of ROMs that were 'cracked' after being dumped and are still floating around on the net.
Do most flash carts these days typically play the unpatched versions or are these hacks still required?

Most DS flash carts play unpatched games these days, some may even crash with them.
Not all patches were anti piracy related -- some were merely to patch around new types of save until flash carts caught up.

Interesting. The save thing makes a lot of sense (I've recently played around with some GBA stuff and it's a similar situation there) Would be interested in knowing if there's any source for patches to add & remove these changes, appreciate this might not be the sort of thing that is appropriate to post here publicly however.
