Actually, the first reports on Hackmii of N declining to service a modded console were out of Germany:
Didn't you read the part of my post about how after half a year the customer has to prove that the modifications weren't what caused the defect? Nobody is going to do this because you are not going to pay an expert thousands of Euros to testify for a repair of a 190€ console. So yeah Nintendo is stonewalling customers who had their Wiis modified. Still doesn't make it illegal, just makes Nintendo douches who don't care for the law.

QUOTEPeople are dwelling on the legality issue because that's what supposedly makes your guide so special and wonderful. Rename it, and people will stop. This is no more legal than NUSD in most jurisdictions. NUSD works a lot better, too.
wink.gif
I'm not going to comment on the legality of xzxero's guide because it actually works for most people. I believe most users care more about the outcome than the legality of the method used, provided no babies are sacrificed at the unholy altar, etc.
If it was illegal I would be all for them dwelling on it, but it's not. As I explained multiple times. So unless somebody can come up with something better than Nintendos EULA, I would apreciate you guys not to further derail this topic.

Granted the question about circumventing copy protection is a lot more in a gray area. Here in germany there are actually contradicting laws since the copy protection law was introduced a few years back. Because we also have a law that guarantees us the right to up to 9 security copys and even the right to give these copys to friends. Plus we still have to pay royalties to the GEMA for blank media, for exactly that reason.
The other thing is that a lot of laywers / judges argue that copy protection is circumvented when something is copied that wasn't supposed to. In this guide however I don't provide disc dumpers or NAND-filesystem dumpers.
So yeah there is kind of a gray area. I give you that. But most people who studied law will tell you that it's still on the legal side of things.

In the end it matters what the laws of the country here GBAtemp is hosted say. Could somebody check those so we can put an end to this discussion, please?
I can however tell you that it is illegal everywhere, apart from maybe china, to distribute copyrighted code unless you have premission from the owners. xzxero's guide uses a lot of Nintendos copyrighted code and I doubt he has the premission.
As far as I know I only redistribute code here where the license premits it. Yes I had a few hickups in the beginning but nobody is perfect.

Regarding this guide allegedly not working as good as NUSD. How can you even compare the two? With NUSD you have to download every IOS, Channel, System Menu, etc. seperately. A guide using NUSD would be 10 pages long.
If you mean NUSAD. How would that be possible? It uses the same command line version of NUSD as this guide!
And I always said that NUSAD is a damn good tool, for experienced users. But it's interface is way to complicated for Newbies. The automod.bat in this guide asks you 3 very easy to answer questions and then you are on your way.

Your last paragraph seems to imply that this guide doesn't work as opposed to xzxero's. May I ask where you got that from?

@yellowperil
Thanks for your support.

Can I just download the missing wads and add them to the sd card?

Thanks for your help and the guide.

no sorry, that won't do.
Did you try to just run it again? Did you get 404 error messages while the program ran?

Edit: it might actually be a bug. dunno why I didn't catch that. will look into it.

Edit2: Actually the checksums are wrong for some reason. Don't know how that happened. Maybe I got something mixed up.
Good news is all your files are fine and you can proceed with the guide. Only the file checking is the problem. I'm in the process of fixing that.

Fixed.
I don't know how the wrong checksums got in there, but it's fixed now.

Please download the automod.7z again. sorry for the inconvenience.

HI,

Thanks for the help. Loading the files on the SD card worked, but I am having a different problem. I was coming from this thread:

http://gbatemp.net/t254179-how-to-reset-my...od-it?&st=0

And I loaded everything on the SD card and put the new config.xml in the sciifii folder, but when I load up the dol I get an error in Hackmii where it says I am using a custom IOS and it cannot proceed. Sorry that is not the direct text, I can type it up if you would like. I was wondering if I should just update the system, I am on 3.3U right now. I hacked my wii a long time ago and have not touched all of the different updates for a while now. I am hoping to get my games on an external hard drive since I think my dvd drive is starting to die out.

Thanks for any help. Sorry for all of the problems I am having.

Were you the guy who wanted to get rid of cioscrop/darkcorp?
You should already have the homebrewchannel so you can skip that step. Homebrewchannel won't install on cioscorp.
Start with the sciifii-step.

and no problem. I made this guide to help.

Hi,

No I was not the darkcorp guy, I just saw the thread. Thanks for all your help. I got everything working including wiiflow.

you're welcome

I know almost nobody uses this but I was in the mood to update.

Now basically everything is installed through sciifii, which means considerably less steps for the user.

Also noticed that I forgot to link to sources. Sorry about that. I'm surprised nobody bitched about that one. That is a pretty big screwup. Maybe somebody did and I overlooked it. I think linking to the sources should be enough, sicne that is how wiibrew does it and they are pretty strict with rules.

Priiloader is a little older but newer versions only had minor updates to the core program. The updates were mostly to the installer. I use the sciifii installer here anyway, so that is of no concern. Also I won't use the official priiloader installer until the bug in the Homebrew channel is fixed. I don't trust the workarounds in the priiloader installer.

Have fun

Updatet the guide.

Had this lying around a while, just hadn't any drive to test it. Everything should be up to date.

I found that sciifii v4 has a bug that may actually prevent you from using this guide if your Wii has no internet connection. But the orst that can happen is that it just doesn't work. So just try it.
Ah who am I kidding. Nobody is using this. :D

Anywho it's the fun you get from making this stuff that counts, isn't it?

But the orst that can happen is that it just doesn't work.
Or someone gets their wii bricked and then has to pay me $50 to fix their wii and comes back all pissed off at you sending you death letters and bombs.... and then the zeta cartel comes after you and murders your family and skins you alive and then burns your whole time down to ashes.

Yeah, whats the orst that can happen :D

I vote that this thread be closed for good.

QUOTE(Am0s @ Sep 11 2010, 10:14 AM)
everyone is only commenting on the legality issue's, my 2 cents on this is you can LEGALLY break you wii or do anything to it, in the eye's of nintendo if you stamp on your wii or mod it in anyway then you are in BREACH of user agreement (EULA) and trying to get nintendo to repair your console when its in breach on EULA could be classed as illegal in the eyes of nintendo.

I think the op should rename his TuT to safely mod your wii, or another way to softmod your wii, either way good luck with your Tut slowking

No.

The EULA isn't law, breaking it isn't against the law.

Technically the EULA is considered a contract, and contracts are considered legally binding. Of course you enter a gray area if someone under 18 is doing all the modifications.

Personally I believe it's illegal for another reason - in most countries, it's illegal to circumvent DRM measures, regardless of your intentions. In the United States some devices (mobile phones for example) were given exceptions. I suspect video games will fall soon enough, but not yet.

With that said I don't really care, IMO it's a dumb law, and it's not like Nintendo is going to sue anyone for installing the homebrew channel. But if you get down to the gritty details, it's not quite legal (which is why it bugs me when people get on their high-horses and speak down against people who install backup loaders and whatnot)

Yeah sure. It's not like I tested this to death and made sure it's safe. If those network problems are there sciifii just won't start. That's it. So nothing is modded.

If sciifii works for you, it's safe. Plus I designed all the steps in it so it could fail after each one of them and nothing would happen. Even though I never had that problem in a ~100 tests.

you even read the thread?

Anywho. The automod.7z no longer contains the hackmii isntaller. Will update the download link in a minute.

FYI, if you read the whole thread you'll see I listed a whole whack of gpl issue that I believe were all eventually addressed. Anyways, I don't think too many ppl are using this app now, so even complaining about a GPL issue that has already been fixed can be nothing but good for it... no such thing as bad publicity right? lol

edit:
btw, you haven't earned "newbie" status yet, your still a "Newcomer", lol :P

I already reported this thread to a mod to close it. No point in replying to it anymore.

@Anon... Please read more. All of your recent posts have been nullified by better methods. You seem to just be a noob that is being a thorn in the side of the community...evident by your post in this thread that pointlessly bumped this thread.

I know you are trying, but you are trying too hard to stand out and in the end you are kind of making yourself look worse (again, evident by going out of your way to call out and to bump a thread that no one is giving a damn about and was not currently being active).

There are better ways to make a name for yourself.

Mods... PLEASE close this thread.

Hackmii installer is not includet in this.

But yeah you can just as well use modmii. It's gotten a lot more user friendly than it was when I started this thread.
I still like how this uses a lot less steps, but as long as sciifii has those network problems it's not supirior and depending on the situation, modmii might be the better choice.

However, this guide will still work and is perfectly save. I would appreciate if the thread wasn't closed.

So even though some people will find somethign wrong with this:

The newest homebrew channel and the fact that it now always reloads IOS, fixes the crash Sciifii had when no network was present.
That makes this by imo the easiest process to mod a Wii for everybody, with the least steps. But nobody is forcing you to use it. You can still use Modmii if you like. No need to point that out.
