Kinect does hacker's bidding
but not for fortune or fame

Yes, Microsoft's Kinect has already been cracked, as you'll see on video after the break -- the motion-sensing depth camera now nods its head on command and displays real-time accelerometer data on one lucky hacker's PC. We tracked down the son-of-a-gun who did it -- as it happens, the same NUI Group member who hacked the PlayStation Eye in 2008 -- and found to our disappointment that he doesn't necessarily intend to unleash his new exploit on the world. The $2,000 prize Adafruit is presently offering for open-source Kinect drivers isn't his aim, though he does have big personal plans for the device, as he hopes to integrate it into his company's commercial visualization suite CL Studio Live. It seems that work is progressing fast, as he's already gotten video streams from both cameras to output to his computer, and he plans to upload a far more convincing video soon. Here's hoping he has a change of heart about sharing his rapid accomplishments.[/p]

I think he can make more that $2000 Dollars when he puts it in his software suite!

EDIT: Added more vids!

To quote some comments from the source (in order):
QUOTE said:
Joshua: Yes, but Kinect has four directional microphones that are capable of picking up on specific noises in a noisy environment - a person's voice, for example - and triangulating the location of that noise's source. So, it's capable of quite a bit more than a standard webcam microphone.

MrFluffyThing: This will do wonders for the porn industry!
QUOTE
Joshua: Amateur porn production quality will skyrocket - it'll be like a creepy, automated cameraman that can precisely track an *ahem* actress (or actor) as she does her stuff.

Saw this earlier. Pretty awesome, but my 360's broken so meh. o3o

The whole point of this is its on the PC. NOT the 360. It is completely irrelevant if you have a working 360 or not.
But why would you buy kinect ONLY for your pc?
BTW He said it to spam me..

very well done actually, he must have totally dissected how the kinect works and translated it plus the accuracy he has got tells u tht he is not at all far from the complete version

Depends what becomes possible with it...I dunno how much a Kinect is, but it may be worth it if it has some decent uses via PC.

Will this be used on the 3DS too ??? because dogs in nintendogs can see you and lik your face just like kinectimels(or something like that)

No. This is far more advanced than the 3DS I am fairly sure. The 3DS just has two, slightly differently angled cameras, so it can take 3D pictures and the like, but I'm fairly sure the hardware in this thing is a lot more advanced than that.

It's 150 for a webcam which sends infra-red light + mics..

Boy, in the short time Kinect has been out, we've already learned so much about how it works. It is really a truly amazing device, even for all its inaccuracies and blemishes.

The knowledge of a console/peripheral's inner workings is one of the best results of homebrew.

yes now all we need to do is get it away from m$ so it can fully be used to it's true potential
