Judge grants Sony's requests selectively.
The court agrees Sony's going too far.
selectivedocuments_feb10201.jpg

Sony's Temporary Restraining Order against George Hotz (geohot) was granted, though not in full. George Hotz is still restricted from posting anything online about the material in question and his personal computer equipment will be searched by Sony. However, the judge had this to say about Sony's demand that the information be removed from the internet entirely.

Susan Illston said:
It’s information. It can’t be retrieved. It’s just not practical. What would they do, Xerox it and mail it back?

Sony's subpoena to Google and Twitter that would demand personal information about it's users (including the IP addresses of people who simply commented on a video) was denied as well.

The court seems to agree that while Sony has a legal case and a right to defend themselves, many of their accusations and requests are going too far or just don't make sense.

Uhhhh....Sony's not coming after PSP Pirates like myself yet, are they? Only the PS3 pirates, right? 'Cause I don't flash consoles. Only handhelds. And even then that's a policy that stops when I get my 3DS, going back to legit gaming now that I can afford it.

Except my PSP. It's already hacked and I have 5 memory cards. May as well make use of them.

And my DS Lite. Same thing, really.

Don't worry, they're only going after those who MAKE HACKS and release them TO THE PUBLIC, not the ones USING said hacks.

Also, they're doing nothing about the PSP.

They're also doing nothing about the PS2, and that being my most recent console purchase, I'm good too

(Honestly Tho, I bought my new PS2 before sony started all this BS. If I had heard about it I would've probly said "screw it" and bought a used gamecube or Xbox 1.)

Okay, let me make this clear, while I disagree with him being sought after, I agree with the fact that his stuff has to be searched, it's only common sense to do that. But, what I don't agree with, is having Sony do the search.

He could have personal files on there about himself, or friends/family/loved ones that Sony is going to look at. That's a total invasion of privacy.

Basically what I'm saying is, he should have the right to say "Yeah, don't look through these folders Sony." But then Sony has to hand his stuff over to the judge or whatever, someone in the legal business to look through it.

tl;dr: I agree with having his stuff searched, don't agree with Sony getting to do it.

they are

they released 6.37 for the psp which blocks the hen exploit (the private key still works though which means that it might be unfixable)

and the ps2 they have been releasing new hardware revisions to prevent free mcboot from working

They needed time to think about this?

What the fuck am I doing in school when I have more common sense than a bunch of Sony executives and court heads?

I love how even the judge knew that information can't be removed from the internet completely. If Sony tries to go any further with this, they'll just be burning their resources.

Now I'm wondering, how far would Sony go to get rid of the information?

Sony only gets to keep/copy the stuff that actually relates to the case. So while they can look at his porn and such, if it's not related to the case they can't copy it off his computer.

I'll suggest to those that are worried about privacy when it comes to property seizing to look into truecrypt.

You want "beginner's tutorial" and then especially "plausible deniability".

I know that, hell I even have one of the un-FMCBable consoles...and a swap magic

I mean they're not taking legal action against PSP and PS2 pirates.

Does anyone else find it scary that Sony is the one doing the SEARCHING FOR EVIDENCE?

If I'm not mistaken, you'd be required to give the password to unlock the encrypted drive or face obstruction of justice (or something along those lines).

There are ways to hide it, but it's apparently quite easy to find it if you look.

He (Geohot) should just format his HD with a special kind of tool, so it can't be retrieved and make a text file on the root titled:

ps3 hacking instructions.txt

Sony would open it up and it would say:

"Lol, ur security = epic phail"

Yes. That's why I said it shouldn't be Sony doing the search. It should be someone else.

Just saying
Dude. He HAS to give the data over. He can't lock it up and say "too bad".
