Even if radiation is not contained and fully released, by the time it reaches west coast radiation level will be so low that it'll not pose a health threat
French private nuclear institute (Criirad) said that radiation cloud already reached California coast and low radiation were measured.
I don't know how bad it is or if it will pose a health threat, but it's still more than no threat at all.

CriiRad (fr) is doing mostly food and air test, and has some Japanese food report.
Spinach contamination (jp+fr) from these spots

air test state that it's 10 time more important than the Chernobyl cloud measured in south of France.
0.3 Bq/m3 south of France, 3.2 Bq/m3 at Tokyo.
Sure, Tokyo-Fukushima is shorter than Ukraine-France, but it's just to show that Europe had thyroid cancer over 20 years with this low radiation level, and Japanese government is saying there's no problem

Sure this is not a death mater, the radiation won't kill people, it's only a cancer matter, no problem there !
Japanese people don't understand why other countries are that much concerned.

Actually the thyroid cancer thing is very controversial. Most of them where that tiny (compared to what they would normally notice or bother even treating) and they where looking so hard it was inevitable they would find more than normal. And at any given time almost everyone has 2 or 3 small cancerous growths in there body, but most of the time the immune system deals with them.

People take Potassium iodine tablet, which contains iodine-127, to deal with iodine-131 fallout. Thyroid absorbs iodine-127, thereby blocking iodine-131 absorption.

Iodine-131 has a short half-life, 8.02 days. Iodine-131 is sometimes used in medicine as a treatment, medical professional usually use it in large amount as opposed to small amount as it can also kill off any potential cancerous cell.

I-131 decays into Xe-131, which is a stable noble gas.
