Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said an investors meeting that a “big hit title” is needed to combat dwindling sales of DS hardware in Europe.

Speaking at the meeting, he said that Wii is also lacking of big titles, despite having Super Mario Galaxy 2 releasing next month and Metroid: Other M in Q3 this year in the region.

“In the U.S., Xbox360 has been keeping the lead over PS3 this year, he said. “In Europe, on the other hand, while Xbox360 was showing the decline, PS3 has shown increase since the fall of 2009. It appears that the benefit of third party publishers’ big multiplatform titles has been mainly contributing to PS3.

“On the other hand, the sales of Nintendo DS hardware in Europe are showing a year-on-year decrease, unlike the United States market,” While Wii has been embracing big hit titles since the latter half of 2009, not many strong titles to significantly drive hardware sales have been launched for Nintendo DS for a while.”

He further adds: “So, we recognize that we are coming to the stage where we need to offer a hit title that can gain social phenomena and catch our customers’ attentions.”

So there you have it. Get cracking on a new Zelda DS title, Nintendo.

Bring damn F-Zero out already.

DS could use a big hit, but to Nintendo, that's the likes of Nintendogs and New Super Mario Bros.

How hard can it be to make New Super Mario Bros 2?

I'm pretty sure Iwata is talking about Touch Generations games such as Nintendogs, Brain Training, Wii Fit etc.

I don't think games like Golden Sun, F-Zero or even Zelda would really drive sales as much as games like those, that appeal to all ages, would.

Sales will rocket when Layton 3 is released in Europe. But I heard a rumour about a second Mario Kart title. Can't remember whether it was for the Wii or DS though but considering the new issue of ONM has a feature on Mario Kart: Past, Present and Future and they have an exclusive next month, that gives it a bit of credit. As I said it was just a rumour.

Any sequel to a high sales game on DS would rake in the cash but I'd expect Nintendo's priority at the moment to be on 3DS and getting that finalised before thinking about a big DS title.

A new Kirby game would be awesome.
The last one was pretty good, and the sales weren't bad if I'm not wrong.

As long as it's a classic Kirby game (read: Amazing Mirror/Superstar Ultra/...) I'm okay with it. I didn't like Canvas Curse because it wasn't like Kirby at all... So I hope that they never make something like it again.

Yea, Canvas Curse didn't really appeal to me neither.
I also don't really like those 3D Kirby games. Just plain 2D for me :>

I really would love a side scroller Metroid or a new FZERO...........but knowing Nintendo, what they should come up with is something that you can play online with a massive community of all ages that everybody can pick up and play...........and then heavily advertise it all over the world.
Something like Nintendogs for example but with people instead of dogs, so that when you walk trough the park it finds your soul mate in real life..............you know something creapy like that for lonly people or desperate housewives.........LOL

Dwindling ds sales in europe exist for two reasons:
-Most of the people who want a ds, have one by now
-In europe 90% of released games are shovelware. Good games, if released in Europe at all, come anywhere from a month to a year later than the american version, and most of em (yes TWEWY I'm looking at you) are nowhere to be found here.
