Is it possible to transfer an original pkm gold save to the new VC release?

So like on a 3DS with a custom firmware. Is it possible to transfer an original pokemon gold save file from back in the days to this virtual console release? So I can recover my old pokemons from years back?

Or is the .sav file completely different for the new game???
