To start, I will say I do indeed like french fries. Is just deep fried potato. (Health enthusiast gasp) But I also have a problem with them. Most of the time I'm eating french fries, is with hamburger or hotdog. It's common here to serve as a "meal" or combo when ordering from various fast food places like McDonalds, Burger King, wendy's and even chinese kitchens. The problem isn't the french fries themself, is the fact that it comes with the stuff I eat.
Hotdog and Hamburger are beef meat between bread, and french fries can feel much like bread too. They both are considered starch by the way, and they are also dry and similar texture. Not to mention "Potato buns exist." So I just feel like is "more bread on the side." Chinese restaurants have a combo of french fries and fried chicken. (Is cooked in flour meaning more bread) At the pizza shop, they have similar combos, even fish which is also fried in flour so of course... more bread. And even the basic sandwich gets french fried comboed.
Is just too much bread in my opinion to add fries to all of these things. Some people I know eat sandwich with Potato chips, subway has them in bags that you can have with your order. I feel is much better since the chips aren't as big as the french fries. I guess this is why I got used to eating the variety known as "Shoe string" and not the big chunky or wrinkly ones. I can of course also complain about onion rings cause it's also of course deep fried in flour making it bread too. But what do you think? I would probably just eat them if I wanted a snack or maybe for breakfast, with eggs and sausage. Makes good substitute for hash browns.
French fries is good, but to me it feels like fast food places uses it to compensate for making up most of a combo meal. Like having a overload of rice cause is lots of it cheap to buy and easy to make. In other words, expendable. Instead of equalizing it with the other things in the meal like meat, it's something that's I often considered last to finish or even unfinished.
