Hi everyone,

I'm looking at importing a metallic blue 3DS XL NTSC from Japan to use here in North America, and play North American backups.

I've successfully put CFW on a North American 2DS without any complications and it's working great, but can I follow Plialect's 3ds guide again for the exact same process on an imported Japanese 3DS?

Will there be any region issues or complications? Anything I should watch out for? I'm assuming that because the 3DS XL is brand new, the firmware should be hackable still... can anyone confirm?

Thanks in advance!

You would need for it to be new and have it never access the eshop to work flawlessly with a region swap. For that to happen, you would need to find on that is on or below 10.7 or above 8.1 (its easier to work with a 9.0+ console).

Every console I have gotten from Japan in the last two months has been 11.x

Which ones have you been importing?

The seller confirmed this has never been used or opened, and I think they were released in 2014. Online reports they were shipped with 9.x

Unless they've been re-manufactured?

I order from play asia and amazon jp. Primary order white ll, blue ll and other limited edition ones

is JPN consoles cheaper than US ones?

Depends on how many you order, shipping prices and current exchange rate. They average about $20 less from amazon

A New 3DS XL from Amazon.co.jp shipped to the USA is ~$170, so it is a bit cheaper actually. But, of course, to CFW/region change it, it'd have to be 10.7 or below (unlikely) or you'd need to hardmod it or have another, already CFW'd Japanese console for DSiWarehax.

Totally off-topic, but the store I bought N3DS right now has a tons of DUAL IPS lol.

Lucky, i can't even find any 3ds locally to fulfill my orders due to the holiday rush.

Also what colors? For me the cosmo, pink and green have been really good for dual ips. White has been a hit or miss for bottom or dual

I grabbed a NIB Japanese O3DS from some Amazon seller to give me the capability to downgrade other Japanese consoles (without hardmod) for fun. I've only done one so far, though, a Pink 2DS from Amazon. It was a bit more expensive than a US 2DS, but my little sister fucking loves pink stuff.

I might grab some N3DSXLs for more fun. Not sure how I can justify buying more 3DSes but I'll figure it out. :)

I'm looking to order this one: https://www.amazon.co.jp/任天堂-Newニンテ...F8&qid=1483340887&sr=1-1&keywords=3ds+ll&th=1

Have you guys ordered this one specifically? I'm so surprised that it would be over 11.x considering it was released in 2014....

Thanks for the feedback, it's really appreciated

The SFC and Pikachu have the highest resale value for the price for me

Just because it was released in 2014 doesn't mean they don't make new ones. Japan has a high turn over rate for consoles so if it was made in August or later its 11.0

I haven't, but it's a normal N3DSXL. They are making new ones constantly and 11.0 has been out for a good long while.

I just bought a white N3DS LL on the Japanese amazon site and it came with 9.9J.

They don't seem to be that uncommon.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
