Ignorance annoys me off (uk)

I wanted to make this post to let off some steam about how I'm affected by ignorance constantly nearly everytime I speak to someone from outside the uk.

I find a lot of people from North America think England = Britain, You might think so what? I suppose Canadians feel the same way when people act like they are Americans in Europe. However my fellow countrymen (Scotland) didn't fight for "Britain" to be branded english. How would an american feel if they get called mexican or Canadian constantly?

One example that pissed me off the other week was that paper headline from the new york times that basically said the USA "beat"Britain at a football match, When infact they "beat" England.

I mean what do people actually think? do they really think Britain = England? or if Scotland, N.Ireland, Wales are so crappy they don't deserve to be put in the same group with England? Or do they not even know what Britain is? I really can't tell if they know or are just clueless.

I could go on all day about this but I can say it really gets under my skin when my Nation does something and then gets branded English.


Now I want to move on to Ignorance in the UK.

I find the media and a lot of english people I speak to seem to think the same as North Americans to a certain extent. Let me make an example there was a Tennis tournement on earlier this year and it was a Country tournement where nations all group together and compete for points. Well It was a "British" tennis team however Andy Murrey couldn't make it so all of a sudden the media started referring it to the "English tennis team" when infact they where playing for the UK.

Let's move along a month.... Andy Murrey is playing a tennis match and the very same Media start branding him "British" Now don't get me wrong I'm proud to be British, I don't have a problem with him being called that however if the media are going to do what they did a few month before call him scottish, You can't have your cake and eat it.

This is just the icing on the cake. As a lot of you know I helped the ds-x team out with fixing broken cards and moding their forum, don't get into that in this please. Well One guy I worked along side with I got to know really well and we talk everyday I even think of him as a real life m8, he wasn't a major part of the team, just minor like me. Anyway we where talking one day about Scotland and he replied to me "It's not like that in Britain" I mean

Even some English people don't know what Britain means? I could be wrong could someone enlighten me?

Now guys let's take a look at this, The British Navy flag

Scottish, N.Irish and welsh people also fight for the British Navy yet 3/4 of the flag is the England flag? I don't get it. Everytime I see it makes my blood boil.

There is posts everyday on this site that shows this ignorance.

Now don't take this blog as a bash towards North America and English people, it's not, It's a bash towards Ignorance.

I'm English but I know how you feel, it's the same with me and British, I'm not British, I'm English, the only time I say Britain or UK is when I'm describing laws ect as they are very similar.

I'm English but I know how you feel, it's the same with me and British, I'm not British, I'm English, the only time I say Britain or UK is when I'm describing laws ect as they are very similar.

I would like to just say about football the reason why most Scottish want England to fail in the world cup isn't to do with the England team itself but the Media. I want to make the point again this blog post isn't an Anti-English post. The British media is so ignorant and biased towards England it's so unbelievable. The majority of scotland actually don't mind the England team and the English people but the media need shot. However a large part of my blog post is about the media but also some of the people aswell.

I don't know what English people think when they hear nearly the whole of scotland wanted them out of the world cup. I don't think you would see what the media is really like if your where english. Next world cup watch the TV and read the newspapers now Imagine you wheren't English. Well this post is kind have went off topic but I just thought I would clear that up

Don't take offense to the New York Times. The US media is a disgrace now anyway. The fact that they got their facts wrong is no surprise.

As far as geography goes, it would amaze you how many people here don't have a clue about our own country, let alone others.

So true. Us Scots are almost totally ignored in the media, even though without us there would be no media (i.e. we invented the TV, phone, etc.). The Andy Murray thing bugs me too. When he does well: "...the British tennis star beats...", and when he gets beat: "...the Scottish player beaten by...". The only reason I cringe when England get far in any football tournament is that we'll have another 40 plus years of them going on about winning it. Oh, Americans doing a "British" accent, when in fact it is an English accent they are trying to do. If the media is going to continuously go on about this sort of thing then what we need is a Great Britain football team and a single UK government instead of all this devolved bullshit that achieves nothing. Oh Prowler, if you think there's too many Polish people where you stay you are mistaken, my friend. The immigration points scheme is set up so that you actually get more points just for choosing to stay in Scotland. WHAT THE FUCK.

I agree. I feel the same way about people within, and outside of the US that only read, listen, and/or watch the news that only gives part of what's happening. Then there is my ignorance, which I hate just as much.
