Hacking If I went out and bought a N3DS, would it be at firmware 10.3 or lower?

Like what are the chances? Obviously if it's above that I'm screwed. I can't believe I'm considering doing this, just to play snes games on it. I already have a o3ds XL with custom firmware installed.

assuming buying brand new, 100% chance of it being 10.3 or lower right now pretty much. consoles need to be manufactured months in advance to meet demand, so it will be a while before we see 10.4 consoles in stores.

Like 100%, no kidding.

Afaik, the latest bundle is the n3ds pokemon red/blue/yellow and it comes with 10.2.

There's a chance the announced Tokyo Mirage FE n3ds special edition bundle to come with 10.5 (as no bundle should come ever in 10.4).

If you want to downgrade it, I recommend to do a NAND dump via a hard mod.
I got the red 2DS with... pokémon red and every attempt to downgrade failed as it couldn't uninstall the system menu component.
Once I updated to 10.6 and downgraded FIRM everything went fine, so if you don't want to end up with a frankenfirmware 3DS you should really consider this.
It wasn't fun to try the ARM11 a lot of times then succeeding and always receiving an error message when downgrading system menu, I don't think it would be fun for you.
Edit:
I also tried formating it or changing SD cards, so there's that.

I think you'd have to be pretty unlucky to end up with a console on a firmware newer than 10.3. These things are packaged and distributed months in advance, after all. In fact, the distribution centres are usually sitting on unshipped stock for months.

Seeing that we haven't had a 30 page thread yet about someone buying one new and it being on an "unhackable" firmware of 10.4 or higher (I know, they're still doable via hardmodding), I'm going to presume they don't yet exsist in the wild.

I bought mine from Amazon (USA) less than a month ago, it was a plain N3DS without bundle, was on version 9.9
