Ignore that users post, he doesn't know what he is talking about. He probably should be banned for spreading false information more than once. I have him on ignore just so I don't have to see the dumb and false stuff as often. The CTCaer stuff has nothing to do with AutoRCM; the person poster is conflating issues with Switch Linux with AutoRCM, which never had actual charging issues.

The Switch is designed to charge while in RCM. RCM is a mode for Nintendo, an intended mode. It is used at the service centers to unbrick Switches. The external RCM entry mode - using a 'jig' in the right joycon rail, that is by design. That is so Nintendo doesn't have to open up bricked Switches in order to enter RCM on them. Certain kinds of bricks will force-boot the system into RCM (which is what AutoRCM does, it bricks the Switch in a certain way on purpose) but not all. RCM is also used for other purposes at service centers beyond unbricking, but let's ignore that for now.

Now, with that covered, now that we have established that set of facts, ask yourself this: why would Nintendo not give themselves a way to charge the Switch when it is in RCM? They made purposeful decisions in order to avoid having to open every bricked Switch in order to repair the brick, why would they design the Switch so as to not accept a charge while in RCM? Doing so would require purposeful work.

The Switch charges in RCM mode. It is just fact. I've done it more than a few times, people here have done it, it is just a thing & works & is intended to work & will not cause you problems.
I should be banned for spreading misinformation when you don't even know what on earth you're talking about? Have you even read CTCaer's breakdown of the different charge rates in RCM with or without AutoRCM or do you just believe the world revolves around your lies and misinformation? You presented absolutely zero evidence to backup any of your points. Plus CTCaer's breakdown does not mention Linux once and the context of it had nothing to do with Linux either. Here, I'll even go through the effort of quoting the post myself so you can see not only does it have zero to do with Linux but concrete proof AutoRCM affects the charge rate in RCM unless you have objective evidence of the contradictory.
So, Switch charges and does not charges in RCM. xD

The results (battery was 89%):


The switch can charge normally the battery, if the BCT is intact!
In RCM AND in hekate menu.
*BCT is the boot configuration table that autoRCM corrupts.

Tests showed that it was charging with the same current, as in Horison OS.
The current it was drawing with 89% battery, was 800mA - 1000mA, using Switch wall adapter. On PC, it was the max the hub could give.

With autoRCM, basically a corrupt BCT, the switch behaves differently.
There are 2 behaviors that I saw when connecting to the switch wall charger:
  • Common - It was draining 140-250mA.
  • Common (in hekate) - 200mA - 400mA
  • Rare (normally if you connect charger after powering off from HOS) - Drain of alternating 250mA and 1000mA, with surges of 2.5A.

Summary - facts:
  1. Switch can charge completely normally in RCM or Hekate with a BCT intact
    • The percent % in Horizon OS, after a RCM charge, is not fake.
  2. Switch does not charge normally with AutoRCM, a.k.a corrupt BCT.
    1. Either it charges very slowly or sometimes with a broken slow/fast/slow/fast charge pattern:
    2. Or this behavior is current taken from the USB controller or the BPMP (Nvidia's Boot and Power management processor)
    • In AutoRCM, the Charge IC probably can't update the battery calibration file and could make the percent fake.
I don't know for behavior .3 what really happens and what Switch does. This can be easily examined, by connecting a current multimeter between battery and switch and check the readings.
 
Is there still any advantage of not activating Auto-RCM?

Also do you think in the near future it will be possible to boot to CFW without inserting a payload every time?

autorcm doesn't make any side-effect after atmosphere 0.86 support real shutdown in system,
if you will lay the console aside for a long time. holding power to shutdown in system menu
if you found the battery is pretty dead after a long time. charge it 5-10 mins then plug rcmloader dongle or typec cable with computer.
