Hacking Question I use Auto RCM what else do I need to know?

I decided to use Auto RCM on my switch as I don't want to enter rcm with a jig every time as I struggled to boot into rcm the first time. I then Inject a Payload from tegra rcm gui on my pc. I've read that it's not good for the switch as it is never fully turned off and will always drain the battery which is bad. So if I want to turn off my switch I properly turn it off by selecting power off in Hetake.

Am I doing things correctly?
Is there a better method that I'm not using?
Could I just use sleep mode when I'm not using the switch?

You are doing it correctly. But you can use the latest atmosphere and forget about this, as it shuts down properly and even reboots to cfw.
And yes, you can just leave the Switch in sleep mode.

I have atmosphere 0.8.6
Are you saying that I could get my switch to boot straight into cfw without having to inject a payload? If so that would be amazing and how would I go about doing that?

Never said that.
I said that with ams 0.8.5 and up you dont need to go to rcm to shutdown the console.
And that you can reboot from cfw to cfw.

1,i suggest you should always charging console if it shows less than 20% battery balance.
2,u don't shutdown console in system menu directly becuase that's not a real power off. let it in sleeping mode equals battery saver mode.
3,u can entering RCM menu select "power off" if you want to shutdown console. that's a real power off.

Shutoff console normally > Put console in sleeping mode normally > Shutoff console in hekate?
 
I'm not sure about the specifics, but a Switch in "sleep mode," as much as any other device dependent on energy, still consumes battery charges. Albeit less than when an actual device is running full load.

Only Hekate can shut it off completely if you have auto-CRM enabled, as far as I know.

You're giving old information that isn't correct. Op is on atmosphere 0.8.6. A shutdown through the system menu is a real shutdown.

I checked the change logs of Atmospehere and it seems like this feature was really implemented since 0.8.4.
Did someone test it and can confirm there is really no battery drain anymore when shutting down normally from the menu?
Any point in still doing the reboot or shutdown from the hekate menu?

Yes it works. They wouldn't have written it and kept it in there for 3 versions if it didn't work. No point in rebooting to hekate to shut down. If you still want to for some odd reason, at least use the reboot to payload so you don't have to re-inject.
 
You can only charge your Switch when it's in sleep mode if auto-CRM is enabled.

False. LET THIS MYTH DIE. The Switch is perfectly capable of charging while in RCM mode.

The Switch does charge slower in RCM mode, but you can charge from fully dead to 2% in about 10 minutes. You can then inject a payload and the Switch will charge at full power. Or you can leave the Switch on the charger for a while and it'll charge to 100%.

This is how the story plays out.

TX states that AutoRCM will be a feature of their CFW. Further investigation reveals its a controlled brick designed to boot the console AUTOmatically into RCM. This is both good and bad as we can boot into RCM without a jig but you can't use the console without sending a payload. Then some people got worried the console wouldn't charge if the battery ran out if AutoRCM was enabled which was proven false at around the same day. Console will trickle charge in RCM with AutoRCM enabled even if the battery is "dead". So there were people charging their consoles in RCM with AutoRCM. They were confident it was working as the battery reported higher levels after being charged but consoles were still dying for some reason. The best theory at the time was a falsely elevated battery level which was proven to be true by CTCaer when he tested the charge rates in various states and found charge rate was significantly reduced in RCM with AutoRCM enabled.

While the myth of it not charging in RCM is false, the reduced charge rate combined with falsely elevated battery levels is proof people shouldn't be charging their consoles in RCM with AutoRCM. It was moreso to prove that even if a console with AutoRCM runs out of battery, it will eventually come back to life if it is charged; it just has to be charged longer than normal.

Anyway, this is all documented in this thread which doesn't provide any new information but bundles all information related to AutoRCM in one place for convenient browsing.

that's awesome. it means atmosphere0.86 support real shutdown in system menu within autorcm mode.

Ignore that users post, he doesn't know what he is talking about. He probably should be banned for spreading false information more than once. I have him on ignore just so I don't have to see the dumb and false stuff as often. The CTCaer stuff has nothing to do with AutoRCM; the person poster is conflating issues with Switch Linux with AutoRCM, which never had actual charging issues.

The Switch is designed to charge while in RCM. RCM is a mode for Nintendo, an intended mode. It is used at the service centers to unbrick Switches. The external RCM entry mode - using a 'jig' in the right joycon rail, that is by design. That is so Nintendo doesn't have to open up bricked Switches in order to enter RCM on them. Certain kinds of bricks will force-boot the system into RCM (which is what AutoRCM does, it bricks the Switch in a certain way on purpose) but not all. RCM is also used for other purposes at service centers beyond unbricking, but let's ignore that for now.

Now, with that covered, now that we have established that set of facts, ask yourself this: why would Nintendo not give themselves a way to charge the Switch when it is in RCM? They made purposeful decisions in order to avoid having to open every bricked Switch in order to repair the brick, why would they design the Switch so as to not accept a charge while in RCM? Doing so would require purposeful work.

The Switch charges in RCM mode. It is just fact. I've done it more than a few times, people here have done it, it is just a thing & works & is intended to work & will not cause you problems.
