I just don't understand the prejudice people always have for Runescape. Not only does the free area have an incredible amount of stuff to do, but it's also large enough to keep someone entertained for at least 200+ hours. Not to mention the sheer amount of stuff that $8 a month will add. It's fine if YOU don't like it, but don't try to get your friend to change because YOU don't like it. I'd suggest a few games on this list.
I think the main problem is that everything is a grind.

It's browser based for a reason, so the kiddies don't use to o much bandwidth and their parents don't get angry at them. The game is for prepubescent kids. Grow a beard and play a real game.
You do realize that most MMORPG's use next to no bandwidth?

I always thought The 4th Coming was a cooler alternative to runescape, and it's also free. I'm surprised it's not dead yet actually... think of it like a Diablo-like game.
Wait, T4C still exists? I thought the official server (run by Verizon IIRC) went down ages ago and only the private servers were left.

I'm not sure, but I've checked back on it now and again when I get a feeling of playing something... like that. I never do, but I did check out their forums and there still seemed to be some sort of activity.

Or you know, the rest of the world has cheaper and better internet connections available. Because the only place I've heard of where parents get angry for bandwidth usage is Australia. The game is for all ages, please grow a pair before growing a beard.

C'mon guys, every single one of you is big enough to not start petty arguments ;)
I was done with it after that last post. Also, I thank you for leaving the first part. At any rate, I've left my $.10. Though I will say, if you're going to get addicted to any game, Runescape isn't a bad one. Once you've had your fill though, you'll move on to several other games. I guess you could say that Runescape is the gateway game. If you could stop that, I'd say do it. I've seen many of my friends lose more of their life in an MMO than they should have.

I'm surprised none of you have said it yet.

Let her play the damn game. Just because you don't like it is a pretty shitty and selfish reason to get someone to stop playing a game. I don't care how shitty the game is.

I used to play crappy games... Until I took an arrow to the knee.

I also used to play epic games like T4C (and sleep through school because I played it through the night). To each their own.

But as mentioned, this is no place to tell people what to do/study/play. Suggestions are suggestions (like I suggested MapleStory but it's not OSX compatible) but lecturing and preaching just... Well, let's just stop.

Hey buddy this guy is doing a noble deed.
She needs to be playing Tera.

as my fucking cleric seriously

No one recommended Diablo III?

It's coming out in less than a month, and is such a better game. It can either be played casually or hardcore too.

This, definitely.

If that don't cut it, intro her to WoW. Or maybe not, considering you could potentially create a far more potent problem

there's a browser one called Crystal Saga. I won't post a link because it has been published by different companies(even Aeria Games). do your homework and check videos on youtube.

anyway, if you don't like Runescape, and if she ends up not liking the game you choose, then just let it be. let her play her game and don't play it just to please her(unless you are getting something out of the deal).
