How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

5. Play Newer Wii Games, Gamecube games and Install USB Loader GX

Follow Aces instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important: At 3:30 in Video (WiiMod) make sure in 'Wii Mod' to install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad before you install DIOSMIOS. After you installed IOS249-d2x goto Main Menu of 'Wii Mod' and select 'Change IOS' and pick 249 . Look in Main Menu right corner it should stand 'Current IOS: 249 . You want to install DIOSMIOS to IOS 249 as you will be playing your gamecube games and wii games from 249.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

1.
As penguin98 said.

Some will work but some might not. When I first created the guide a few years ago I didn't have that warning. But allot of people where having issues and 90% of the problems ended up being Micro-SD card related. So that is why I added the do not use a Micro-SD card warning in my guides.

If the guy that is modding your system has modded previous systems using a micro-sd card then it shouldn't make a difference in the end. As long as it works it is fine.

2. you can remove the files when you installed hbc BUT, the folder /bootmii/in SD card ia used when u launch your Wii , if u installed the best option in hbc , so bootmii folder is useful to save

I think i should take the role as Mom here.

Yes, if your SD isnt SDHC it should be ok.

If your card however is SDHC i would buy a normal SD instead.

SD can be bought in most online electronic stores and cost not much,
and if you use SDHC and step 3 in this guide goes wrong you could end up
with a broken Wii. That is more expensive then buying a new SD card.

I just followed these instructions to a "T" up to and including step #4. This is on a used wii that was never softmodded. I previously had a wii that was modded with a harddrive but it ended up bricked because I followed some outdated procedures. Now I plugged in the harddrive that already has all my games on it and loaded USB Loader GX. This is the result. Can anyone help me fix this, please?

edit: apparently embedding the image doesn't work. Here is the link

Run ModMii and chose The SU option. It will check your syscheck and tell you what files are missing and then download them for you.

Make sure you're running the latest USB loader as well

Hi,

I'm sorry if I misread any post but I'm very new to gaming consoles and I recently bought used Wii and I want to update it.

When I got it I connected it to wifi and I tried to update everything (normal thing for me). I successfully connected to the internet but I got error 32004.

I was browsing on internet and I found out that I maybe have softmodded Wii. If I hold reset button while power on I got white screen where it says IOS v60, Systemmenu v450, priiloader v0.3b (r48M).

Now I can't update it to 4.3 and I don't know how to upgrade and unlock it. I'm also interested in USB loader GX.

Can you guys please help me with that. There are many things written around it but since I think I have unlocked Wii I'm quite afraid to do it because I don't want to brick it.

I have a solution.

To play gamecube games from USB you need - diosmios - .

To install diosmios look up my guide and step 5, i explain there how to get use wiimod and install cios249 and diosmios .
Diosmios is found on dmlizard , shown in video for step5.

HOWEvER - if you have orginal gamecube games. Diosmios isnt the only option...But Devolution .

https://gbatemp.net/threads/devolution-public-release.330554/

Devolution ask you to put your orginal gc disc in once, and then never again. Its a perfect solution for gamecube lovers who wants too use USB and not Discs.

Hey players,

I'm a newcomer here so i hope you will be nice to me =)

I have a bit of a problem now with my VCgames. How I feel at the moment is like "if it works, don't fix it" -type of problem. Alright so here it goes:

For me everything worked fine when i had two seperate usb-sticks: one with NTFS format where was all my wii games, and one with FAT32 format, where were all my VCgames, roms and others games basicly. And what I wanted in order not to swipe these usb sticks all the time was that I buy an external HDD and have two different partitions, one with NTFS and one with FAT32.

Alright, everything worked fine, i copied my games to their right partitions except that i couldn't copy&paste the GxEmunand folder to FAT32. And then i started to think that what's wrong with this? So my first mistake: I thought that it might help to copy&paste the GxEmunand folder if I take "read-only" tap off. Well, i was wrong and then everything was basicly corrupted.

Ok so i fucked up but i decided that alright, i'm just gonna copy then again to my HDD using ShowMiiWads. I do the basic drill, extract it into NAND and everything works fine. I boot my wii and it even shows up there. I though that "phew, thank god everything seems to work out". And then i do the basic stuff, video mode forced to NTSC and hit play. Now i've tried five games and all i get is a black screen and it doesn't go any further. I'm now helpless what to do.

I'm using GX loaderUSB, rev1233, IOS249 (rev 21008) + AHB, d2x v8final base37.

Any help or tips would be great!

I was thinking that should i install this? IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad I just can't find this file anywhere....

//EDIT:

Alright with a bit of research i found the right place to find all the necessary files for cios installer.

Although, even i've now this IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad installed it doesn't work. The same black screen. and videomode NTSC. So please, other tips?

Two things you can do.

1. Re-install emunand and install the games to new emunand with showmiiwads again
2. Install a game to showmiiwads. If it works, you can with 95% install the wad of th game to your real nand with Wiimod or MMM. USb loader gx's isnt perfect for VCgames, so i done that myself for 3-4 wiiware/vcgames.

I tried to install bootmii, I downloaded //bootmii.org/download/ . I packed it up and put it in the root of the sd card, but HBC did not find any files, so I put it in a map which was named app. but still will not find HBC. what am I doing wrong, is getting crazy on this

Thank you for the easy to follow guide on this. However, I am having an issue during installation. When attempting to open WAD 1.7 the screen comes up with a disclaimer asking to press A to continue or B to cancel. I press A on the Wavebird and nothing happens. One time I received a dump message with a bunch of letters and numbers, another time the screen went all wacky and was flickering. Any suggestions on how to get the WAD manager working?
