How to play GameCube games off a USB HDD.

Welcome to my guide! This will teach you to "backup" your games that you TOTALLY legally own. Right?
This guide is completely compatible with Windows, Mac (Wine), and Linux (Wine). I do not have access to an Apple machine, but theoretically, it should work. Please note that this guide requires you to format your HDD, however you can still use it for storage after we're done, so just back it up before we begin.

NOTE BY A MODERATOR :

There are different methods to play Gamecube games off a USB HDD, and this outdated guide will only tell you ONE method.
It will not explain to you how to run gamecube games from USB HDD, but instead will tell you to do things blindly and install specific outdated files and use a specific outdated USB Loader version.
It doesn't cover other USB HDD methods or other Gamecube loaders.
Don't follow this guide if you want updated informations, updated loaders or if you want to use a different gamecube loading method.

You can follow it only if you want DIOS MIOS 2.8 (outdated) and CFG Loader v70 r36 (outdated).
Thanks for reading,
Cyan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will need:
-An SD Card
-A USB HDD
-Wii Mote
-GameCube Controller
-A Wii with Homebrew Channel installed
-A GameCube iso

Download Links:

COMPUTER:

1.) Download WiiFlow from the Download List above. Put it in the apps folder of your SD Card.

2.) Download the DIOS MIOS v2.8 RAR. Go to 'DM', then move 'DIOSMIOS_2.8' to the root folder of your SD card, or for easier installation put it in a folder on the root titled 'wad'.

3.) Download MMM, and put it in your apps folder.

4.) In the DM folder in the RAR, there will be a file named DMToolbox.exe, run it, select your games iso file, and choose where you want the game's folder to go (Desktop will do.). Hit 'Install', and the folder will appear where you wanted it to, it will be named the game's ID, which will, to you, appear to be a bunch of random characters.

5.) Download and Install EaseUS Partition master, and open it. Find your HDD, and right click it, and select 'format'. Format it as FAT32 with 32KB Clusters. *DON'T IGNORE! Press OK, and then "Apply".

6.) Look at your empty HDD, and make a 'games' folder. Put the folder with the Game ID in there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WII:

1.) Plug in your HDD in USB Slot 0. Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch MMM.

2.) Choose WAD Manager on the menu and install DIOSMIOS_2.8.wad

3.) After you're done, exit MMM. Launch WiiFlow.

4.) Go to Settings, and change game partition to USB1

5.) Press 'B', and select the Gamecube icon

7.) Choose a game and press Start. Every time you add new games, you have to hit the home icon, and hit update cache, and your game list will refresh.

Congratulations! You can now play GC games from your USB HDD!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFG USB LOADERv70 r36:

COMPUTER:
Follow steps 3-7 in the COMPUTER guide above.

WII:

1.) Follow step 3 in the guide above.
2.) Install DIOS MIOS using MMM.
3.) Launch CFG USB Loader.
4.) Click the icon with tools on it
5.) Set "DML Version" to DM.
6.) Launch your game!

Okay I am a little confused.... Which one was I supposed to install? The 1 I downloaded was this one "DIOS MIOS 2.6 real NAND with DMToolbox (+source) Load games from USB" or was I supposed to get the "2.6 *NEEK DI" one? Hopefully uninstalling the .wad contained within the rar archive will not affect my Wii's MIOS?

Also if it helps I am using USBLoaderGX 3.0 rev1209(I did not download the mod file from mediafire since it worked/works fine w/ DM?)

Dios Mios is for USB and Dios Mios Lite is for SD
You would normally install the real NAND version. You only use the other one if you want to run it from Neek2o, UNEEK, or SNEEK and if you don't know what that is it means you don't even have it so just ignore those versions.
Okay so the other rip didn't work either. I guess I'm screwed :'/
It's always something simple that's being overlooked. I just wish I knew what to tell you.

Okay thank you, at least I have the correct DIOS MIOS. So about this "source"(from .rar archive) folder.. do I put it in the WAD folder of my SD card?

Well so far I think I have everything right... I might try to uninstall and re-install the WAD again to see if that makes Pokemon work further than that logo. and yes I have tried both shrunk/raw with same results. Now if there is anything else I need to install onto the Wii or something..? I get the feeling my Wii may be missing something. Also about that mod USBLoader do I still need it?

Okay, the source is just for any programmer that wants to make changes to Dios Mios. You probably won't be needing it. All you really need is the WAD file.

And as far as both of you having problems here, do other GC games work fine for you or is it just this game with problems?

Hmm.. Soul calibur II freezes(noise) whenever selecting a character(any). Paper Mario 1K year door freezes up when going to the "Party" tab in the menu when I push start otherwise it runs excellent. Luigi's Mansion & Mario Sunshine are the only two games that works flawlessly. No issues whatsoever. I've made sure that these games correspond to the Wii's specific region. I have two Wii's one from NTSC-J(virgin unmodded) and NTSC-U(modded) regions. And no I have not region changed my NTSC-U gamecube compatible black wii.

I'll do windwaker next. I'll just rip it from the disc to see if I get any issues & I'll give my XD Gale of Darkness a go.

The only thing I can think of that this 2.6 version of DIOS MIOS broke some games possibly? Though I would not fully confirm that yet.. I would also need confirmation from other people too.

Edit: WindWaker works fine. I managed to beat the first boss so far so good. Now Gale of "Darkness" on the other hand... yea It played through the whole Lugia cutscene then that virtual battle music starts(first battle of game) but only results into an endless pitch black screen w/ the music playing fine and dandy. I am getting a strong feeling that DIOS MIOS may be broken?

Edit2: I also downloaded the DM booter which I ran through HBC and same results for said previous games.

P.S. Please don't hurt me creator of DM who I don't know is.

I was told that it works with version 2.4 so I got the wad for 2.4, do I just install it and it will over-write the 2.6 or do I need to uninstall 2.6?
Yes, just install it over the top.

EDIT : You CAN uninstall it first if you're worried about it. It won't do any harm but situations where that's necessary are rare.

I got both DM's, v2.4 and the newer one v2.7 I will try too see if either helps out.

Edit: Uninstalled v2.6(even though it said "failed") and installed v2.4 Now Pokemon Colosseum works perfect! It gets pass the pokemon logo. Made it up to catching that shadow Croconaw. As for XD Gale of Darkness... still the same. Only black screen w/ music playing in that first "real" battle. So I guess it is safe to assume that something from v2.4 to v2.6 broke some games, at least Colosseum for the matter. Next up I will try Paper Mario and see if switching to "Party" tab in menu freezes up.

Edit2: Paper Mario became playable, no longer freezes whenever switching to "Party" tab in DM 2.4 I guess I'll stick with this version for now.

Edit3: I was browsing a Spanish forum and it turns out that DM makes Pokemon XD hang onto a black screen w/ music after first cutscene in versions2.0-2.2 and lets add 2.4 & 2.6 to that list.

Quick question, thanks for any answer. I've installed DIOS MIOS for use with Configurable USB Loader, which works super awesomely! However now when I try and play some of my gamecube discs which weren't compatible through DIOS MIOS, it still shows the DIOS MIOS splash screen and acts as though I'm loading through it. Is there a work around to play my gamecube discs without DIOS MIOS being involved?

This may have already been answered, but I can't find it.

I followed all the instructions for the usb launcher, installed DIOS MIOS v2.7 and the launcher mod. I did this originally, and my game appeared on the screen (Mario Superstar Baseball), but it told me to update the launcher. So I updated to cfg USB Loader v70and updated the launcher mod, however I could not for the life of me find out how to set the DML settings to DM.

So I downgraded my launcher to the first one mentioned in the instructions, downgraded DIOS MIOS to 2.0, added the launcher mod, and tried again, but the game would not appear, even after I set the path.

This is Day 2 of trying to play GC backups through my Wii. I'm getting a bit frustrated. Someone help?

I am sure you can get it to work but unless you don't mind using another loader.. Grab USBLoaderGX 3.0 rev1209 which works fine w/ DM 2.6 or lower. Also DM 2.7 apparently does not match the source changes, so that may be a reason it does not work?

Go to settings, 2nd page to "Custom Path", scroll down to GC/DM(forgot what it says and make sure it says "USB1:\games\" in USBLoaderGX3.0 and that in USBLoaderGX Main screen to select second/third tab on very tab and check "GC Games" to show your GC games.
I hope you understood this.... I am sleepy @.@

Edit: I forgot to mention that in your USB drive the path is as follows "X:\games\[GameID]\game.iso"

Ok, I got that far, but now when I hit "Start" when the game comes up, it wants to me to copy to to my SD, which is already almost full. Message is "The game is on USB. Do you want to copy the game to SD or delete a game on SD?" Choices are "Copy, Show SD, Cancel". Can't I just load it from the drive directly? And how?

Hmm either search google for the DM 2.0 that loads games from USB because I think you downloaded the one that loads them from SD or go here and get the latest one that says "real NAND - Load games from USB". Also just to be safe, If I were you, I would uninstall the current DM w/ the 2.0 wad you used and install again w/ whatever new .wad you got. You can over-install the previous DM but meh.

Still get the same message. If I use DM 2.7, it'll tell me I have to update my launcher, and CFG UBS Loader doesn't really work with DIOS MIOS.

EDIT: A friend of mine told me that it "probably needs to load the game to the SD card because it has a faster read speed than usb.", but he's never used usb for this before. Does that mean there's no way around it and I just need a bigger SD card? Then what's the point of the usb drive?
